ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop freshman hurdler Alesha Love set a school record and captured first place in the 400 meter hurdles while
Andrew Chavous set a school mark in the men's 400 meter hurdles during the 2013 Carolinas Cup which was held Friday night at the Irwin Belk Track.
In the team standings, the Winthrop men placed first out of six schools while the women finished second. The other five teams competing in the men's events included Savannah State, Gardner-Webb, The Citadel, Radford and Davidson. Love ran away with the women's 400m hurdles by five seconds with a time of 1:02.68. Chavous finished second to Savannah State's Lemar Sakir in a photo finish as he had a time of 53.16 seconds.
In addition to Love's first place in the hurdles, junior distance runner Jeanne Stroud claimed first place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:09.58, missing her school record by just over two seconds. She cruised to the win by 22 seconds over freshman teammate Tristan Langley. Senior Stephanye McCarroll won the shot put competition with a throw of 42 feet, seven inches.
The Winthrop men won five events. Junior
Gabe Holguin ran away with the 1500 meter title with a time of 4:05.86. Senior
AJ Fitzsimmons captured the 3,000 meter run in 8:34.34. Sophomore
Gary Donald won the long jump competition with a leap of 6.91 meters. In the throwing events, sophomore
Mark Britton took first in the discus with a heave of 49.17 meters and junior
Jakeb Elliott won the hammer throw with a distance of 49.20 meters.
Winthrop will be back on the track next week at the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships in Lynchburg, VA.
