Softball Splits With Longwood Wednesday Afternoon At A Windy Terry Field

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop won its suspended game from Tuesday with a 12-10 victory over Longwood before falling 17-5 in the final game of the three-game series, Wednesday afternoon at Terry Field in Big South Conference softball action.

The Eagles and Lancers resumed Tuesday's game that was suspended after the top of the 5th as the Eagles used the long ball to hold on for a 12-10 victory. Winthrop led 6-5 when the game was delayed and Chelsey Schoenfeldt got the home team off to a great start with a solo home run in the first at-bat for a 7-6 lead and finished the game 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBI.

Winthrop falls to 7-10 overall and is 1-2 in the Big South while Longwood is 11-5 on the year with a 2-1 league mark.

Longwood took an 8-7 lead in the top of the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Katie Shinrock and Jamie Barbour scoring on a wild pitch. Winthrop responded with two home runs to highlight a five-run sixth. The first came off the bat of McKenzi Corn as she hit a three-run shot to center that brought in Melanie Andrea and Teja Durante who had both singled to reach base. Schoenfeldt followed with a double to left center and Kathryn Eberlin followed with a two-run home run to center for a 12-8 lead. Both home runs came with two outs.

Longwood scored to more in the top of the seventh with solo shots by Brooke Short and Jordan Cox to finish off the scoring.

The game went back-and-forth from the start as Longwood posted two runs in the top of the first, only to be outdone by Winthrop with four runs. Eberlin provided the big hit with a two-run single.

A Megan Baltzell RBI single and sacrifice flies by Short and Emily Murphy in the top of the third put Longwood in front 5-4 but the lead was short lived as Winthrop put up two in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Kelsey Ritter delivered an RBI triple to right and scored on an error two batters later.

Dallas King started the game in the circle for the Eagles as she tossed the full seven innings allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts as she is now 1-1 on the year. Libby Morris started the game on Tuesday but allowed three runs on two hits and was replaced by Short without recording an out. It was Short that got the loss as she falls to 7-2 after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings.

Eberlin finished the game 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI while Durante finished with two hits and two runs. Baltzell was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI while Short finished with two RBI.

The Lancers took the series as they managed 17 runs on 11 hits in a 17-5 win. Winthrop used three pitchers, but Longwood continued to swing a hot bat all game. Sutton Watson started the game and allowed five runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 2.1 innings as she suffers the loss and is now 6-5.

The top four batters for Longwood combined to go 7-for-13 in the game with 11 runs and 14 RBI. Short had an impressive game going 3-for-3 with three home runs and seven RBI. Murphy added four RBI as she hit a grand slam in the fifth. Short had a grand slam in the fourth.

“Give them (Longwood) all the credit as they hit the ball extremely well,” said Winthrop head coach Mark Cooke. “We made some costly errors and they made us pay every time. They are going to be very tough in the conference.”

Winthrop trailed 5-2 heading to the fourth inning before Longwood posted five runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth.

Schoenfeldt finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and was the only Eagle with multiple-hits in the final game of the series. She finished the series 6-for-8 with six runs and five RBI.

Morris tossed a complete game for the Lancers and is 2-2 on the year after allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Winthrop is back in action on Friday as it hosts the Winthrop/adidas Invitational and will open up on Friday at noon against Delaware State and then face #23 Georgia at 4 p.m.
