Men's Basketball Faces UNC Asheville Wednesday Night On The Road

Winthrop Looking For First Road Win In League Play

The men's basketball team looks for its third straight win as it hits the road for a 7 p.m. contest with UNC Asheville Wednesday night.
The Eagles are coming off back-to-back wins since the end of December after they defeated Coastal Carolina and Liberty at home last week.
Winthrop captured its 10th win of the season and is now 10-11 on the year and 4-5 in the league.
If the Eagles are to even their overall and Big South record, they will have to do it on the road at UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs have won five straight, including seven straight at home where they are 8-1 on the year. This season the Eagles are 2-8 on the road and have yet to win on the road in league play. The last two road losses have come by a total of five points.
In Saturday's win over Liberty, the Eagles shot an impressive 60 percent from the floor in the second half that included a 5-for-8 mark behind the arc. The Eagles shot 46 percent in the game and over four percent for the sixth time in the last eight games. It was also the second straight game they held their opponent under 40 percent from the floor in the entire game.
Since starting off 0-3 in the league, Winthrop has stepped it up defensively and it's paid off with a 4-2 mark since. Over the first three games Winthrop allowed 73.7 points per game while opponents shot 45 percent from the field and held a 36.0 to 30.7 advantage on the boards. Winthrop also averaged 12.3 turnovers per game while only forcing 6.7.
Over the last six games, Winthrop is holding opponents to 55.2 points per game and has a 32.7 to 29.3 advantage on the glass. The Eagles are also forcing five more turnovers per game at 11.8. One of the most notable differences is three-point field goal defense.
Opponents shot 41 percent behind the arc with an average of 9.7 made per game in the first three league games. The last six games opponents are shooting just 31 percent behind the arc and making 4.7 per game.
Sophomore Derrick Henry has been the team's leading scorer since the first game and went through a 5-6 game slump, but has pulled out of it after scoring in double-figures for the third game in a row with 15 in the win over Liberty. Henry is scoring 11.8 points per game and is 14-for-31 from the field and 8-for-14 behind the arc in the last three games.
Junior Joab Jerome had a career-high 18 points in the win over Liberty and in the last five game is averaging 10 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3 assists while shooting 44 percent. Henry, Jerome and Andre Smith are all averaging double-figures in the last five games. Smith is at 11.4 over that stretch and is shooting 48 percent from the floor and an impressive 54 percent behind the arc.
Asheville enters the game with a 13-10 record overall and is 7-2 in the Big South in second place in the South Division. The Bulldogs are 4-0 against the North Division and 2-2 against the South.
The season didn't start well for Asheville with a 1-6 start but since the team is 12-4. The Bulldogs sport the fourth best offense in the league at 72.5 points and are up to 72.9 per game in league play, but just 69.8 at home.
Senior Jeremy Atkinson leads the team in scoring at 17.3 per game and is shooting 48 percent from the floor. He leads the team in rebounding as well at 7.5 per game and is second on the team with 37 steals.
Sophomore guard Keith Hornsby is averaging 14.5 points per game. He's shooting 44 percent from the field, 38 percent from three (37-for-97) and 93 percent from the foul line (68-for-73).
During Asheville's win streak, opponents have only scored 70 or more points once (77-74 win at PC). On the year the Bulldogs allow 68.8 points per game and 66.7 in nine league games.
This is the 64th meeting between Winthrop and Asheville. The Eagles hold a 33-30 all-time lead in the series but have lost two straight and three of the last four meetings.
