ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's basketball team will wrap-up the regular season Saturday afternoon when it hosts UNC Asheville on “Senior Day” at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Eagles are coming off a 73-54 loss at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday as it finished the regular season 0-8 on the road in league play and is now 12-16 overall and 5-10 in the Big South.
Historically the Eagles have fared well in their regular season final games and even better when finishing the regular season at home. All-time Winthrop is 21-13 in regular season finales. Since becoming a member of the Big South Conference, the Eagles are 17-10 overall in their final regular season league game and 12-4 when wrapping up league play at home.
Of its 27 regular season finales in league play, 10 of them have come against UNC Asheville as Winthrop is 6-4 in those games. The Eagles have lost their last home game of the season the past two years, but the last time they did when their home finale in league games it was against UNC Asheville in overtime, 68-65 (2009-10).
Winthrop has dropped three straight against the Bulldogs and hopes to end that streak at home where it holds a 10-4 mark overall and 5-2 record in league games.
It will be the final home game for senior's
Gideon Gamble,
Reggie King,
Shola Diop and
Torrell Priest as all four will be recognized prior to the tip.
Gamble is coming off a 15-point performance in which he was 5-for-11 from the field and 3-for-7 behind the arc. His scoring average increased to 10.0 on the year. With one more three-pointer made, Gamble will reach 100 for his career.
Junior
Joab Jerome led the Eagles with 16 points on Wednesday as he finished 6-for-10 from the floor and also had three assists and two steals in 32 minutes of action.
Sophomore
Andre Smith had an off night after shooting well from the floor the previous four games as he finished with just three points on 1-for-8 shooting and 0-for-6 behind the arc. Smith is averaging 8.9 points on the year and the team is 7-4 when he scores in double-figures.
In the previous meeting with the Bulldogs, the Eagles top two scorers in the game are both out for the game. Sophomore
Derrick Henry had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds while
Larry Brown added 11 points and six rebounds.
Winthrop held a one-point advantage at the half and even led by double-digits in the first half but shot just 33 percent from the floor in the second half and fell 69-56.
The Bulldogs have struggled recently as the team's second leading scorer Keith Hornsby (15.2 ppg) missed a couple of games due to injury and they've lost four of the last five games. Hornsby has returned and seems to be in form as he scored 16 points off the bench to lead Asheville over Presbyterian College on Wednesday. Hornsby was a perfect 4-for-4 behind the arc. In the first meeting against Winthrop this season, Hornsby dropped 21 points as he was just 4-for-13 from the field but 10-for-10 at the foul line.
The free throw line was the difference in the first meeting as Asheville was 28-for-32 (88 percent) and Winthrop was 11-for-19 (58 percent).
Senior Jeremy Atkinson is the leading scorer for the Bulldogs at 17.8 points per game, which ranks third in the Big South. Atkinson comes at you inside and outside as he's knocked down 27 threes on the year and has shot 171 free throws. Hornsby isn't the biggest three-point threat on the Bulldog roster as Trent Meyer has connected on 64 this season.
Winthrop holds a 33-31 all-time advantage in the series but the Bulldogs have won three straight and four of the last five meetings. Asheville has also won the previous two meetings at the Winthrop Coliseum.
