ROCK HILL, SC—The men's basketball team is back in action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Charleston Southern at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop looks to bounce back after two consecutive losses to at UNC Asheville and home to Longwood on Saturday.
The Eagles host Charleston Southern, who is a half a game out of a first place tie in the South Division with UNC Asheville.
In the first meeting of the season, Charleston Southern hit 10 threes and committed just four turnovers en route to a 75-63 victory. Winthrop shot 44 percent from the field, including 55 percent in the second half as well as 8-for-16 from three for the game. However, the Bucs shot 59 percent from the field in the second half.
This is the 59th meeting all-time between the two schools and Charleston Southern has won the last two meetings. Winthrop leads the series 35-23 overall and 29-23 in regular season league games. Despite having lost two in a row and three of the last four to the Bucs, Winthrop has won nine straight at home in the series.
Winthrop hasn't been swept by Charleston Southern in a regular season since 1997.
Over the last two games the Eagles have managed just 56 points in each.
Leading scorer
Derrick Henry (11.6 ppg) has struggled from the field in the last two games going 7-for-22 and 2-for-9 behind the arc.
Andre Smith, the team's third leading scorer, is just 3-for-13 from the field and 3-for-12 behind the arc over the last two games. The Eagles post players over the last two games, not including
Joab Jerome, are a combined 14-for-27 for 33 points. Jerome over his last two games is 5-for-8 and is 12-for-29 over the last three games from the field.
Gideon Gamble is coming off an 18-point performance against Longwood, which are the most points he's scored in a Big South contest. He's now back to averaging double-figures at 10.1.
Charleston Southern enters the game with an overall record of 13-8 and is 8-2 in the league. The Bucs had won eight straight games, but stumbled briefly with a home loss in overtime to Gardner-Webb and a road loss to Coastal Carolina before righting the ship against Campbell on Saturday in an 86-68 victory.
This is a team that leads the country in three-point field goals made per game at 9.6 and shoots 37 percent behind the arc which ranks 56th.
The Bucs are a very balanced team offensively with four players averaging double-figures led by sophomore guard Saah Nimley at 15.8. Arlon Harper, another sophomore guard, is averaging 15 points while senior Jeremy Sexton averages 11 points and senior Mathiang Muo averages 10.9.
Not only are the Bucs good at scoring behind the arc, they are very aggressive going to the basket and have attempted 133 more free throws than their opponents.
In the first meeeting against Winthrop, Muo led five players in double-figures. In the most recent win over Campbell, Nimley led four players in double-figures with 20 points.
The offense is scoring 76.5 points per game, which ranks 26th nationally and second in the Big South. Winthrop has the second best defensive scoring average in the league at 60.1 and hasn't allowed a team to score 70 or more at home since High Point had 74 on Jan. 5 (6 games ago).
Winthrop has not given up 70 or more points in the last 24 wins over the Bucs. In fact, Winthrop has only allowed 70 points or more in three of its 35 wins in the series.
