ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women's soccer team will take on Coastal Carolina in the first round of the 2013 Big South Conference Tournament this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Eagle Field. Winthrop defeated Coastal Carolina earlier in the season with a goal from sophomore
Taylor Walton with just 2 minutes left in the game. Winthrop and Coastal tied for 4
th place in the Big South with matching 7-4 conference records but Winthrop won the head to head tie breaker, making them a first round host.
Winthrop (11-5-1) has lost its last two conference games to Presbyterian and Radford and look start the post season off with a win. Junior Krystyna led the Lady Eagles in goals this year and finishes the regular season with a national ranking of fifth in total goals (17), 3
rd in goals per game (1.063) and 2
nd in points per game (2.38). Sophomore
Taylor Coleman came in total points this year with 14, earning six goals and two assists this year. Junior
Grace Radler tied Freda for first in assists this year with 4 and has directed the Lady Eagles' attack from her midfield position. Goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson started every game for Winthrop making 90 saves and earning a goals against average of 1.20.
Coastal Carolina (10-8-1) have won four out of the last five games, including a 1-0 victory over Big South regular season champions Radford. Freshman Brianna Panico is the leading scorer for the Chants with six goals and has earned three assists in her first season. Senior defender Alyssa Clark leads the team in total minutes played with 1,583 and is in charge of a backline that has only allowed 15 goals this year. Goalkeeper Megan Spencer has also stepped up and played a crucial role for the Chants' defense making 77 saves and only allowing 15 goals, which earns her a .83 goals against average.
The winner will advance to the second round of the Big South conference tournament next weekend at Coastal Carolina and take on the winner of the Radford and Charleston Southern game. Liberty and Longwood are also hosting their first round matchups taking on Presbyterian and High Point, respectively.
