ROCK HILL, SC- Junior
Krystyna Freda scored the lone goal of the game in the final minutes to lead the Winthrop women's soccer team past UNC Asheville Wednesday night. The Lady Eagles improve to 8-2-1 on the year and 4-1 in the Big South Conference, as the Bulldogs drop to 5-7-1 and 1-3-1 in Big South play.
Both teams were slow getting started with only one shot on goal in the first half. Â The lone scoring opportunity in the first 45 minutes came from Winthrop, when junior Freda crossed a ball just outside the 18 to a wide open
Devin Puckett with 3:40 left in the first half. Puckett tried a one -time finish but couldn't keep the shot on target and the ball sailed just wide.
Freda came out in the second half looking to score, when she dribbled around the Bulldogs defense and forced goalkeeper Heather Muller to come out and make a play. Freda and Puckett almost linked up again in the 51
st minute but the ball was cleared by defender Megan Foster before Freda's pass could reach Puckett. Six minutes later, Freda tried again to give the Lady Eagles the lead when she broke past the Bulldogs' defense and was one on one with Muller. Muller managed to get a toe on the shot and the ball bounced just wide of the goal. Freda finally got her 13
th goal of the year when she put away a low driven shot off a free kick after being brought down by defender Allie Jacobius just outside the 18 yard box with only 6:55 left in the game. With the goal, Freda now ties the Big South record for most game winning goals in a career with 17.
Head coach
Spencer Smith was very pleased with the overall effort from his team. " I thought it was a very good win for us. I thought Asheville was a tough team to break down, very well organized and well coached. Our girls stuck to the game and just kept chipping away and finally got the game winner. "
The Lady Eagles will travel this Friday to Conway, SC to take on Coastal Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
