ROCK HILL, SC- Junior
Krystyna Freda scored early in both halves to push the Winthrop women's soccer team past defending Big South Conference regular season champions High Point 2-1 Wednesday night. Freda's goals not only end a four game winning streak for the Panthers but also a puts a halt to a three game shutout streak.
Winthrop seemed to have the momentum at the start of the game, but High Point would soon take over earning three goals and three corner kicks within just two minutes of play. Junior Jacky Kessler had the first dangerous opportunity for High Point when she took a shot on an open net from 25 yards out but it was saved off the line from senior defender
Megan Pritts. The Lady Eagles made their opportunities count, however, with Freda scoring her first goal of the night in the 13
th minute. Freda received a pass inside the 18yard box from junior
Grace Radler and managed to create enough space to get a shot off and hit it past goalkeeper Jesse May. High Point continued to dominate the possession and had a few shots go just wide, including two headers from senior Becca Hamby that were just off target.Â
Freda would make the lead 2-0 just 1:12 into the second half when defender Alise LeCompte failed to clear a through ball from senior
Okina Crawley and Freda slotted it by May from 18 yards out. High Point would get one back in the 53
rd minute when Kessler ripped a shot from 30 yards into the upper ninety past a diving
Amelia Henderson. The Panthers would continue to try and equalize but a strong defensive effort from the whole Winthrop team would deny High Point from scoring.
Henderson had an outstanding performance and kept Lady Eagles in the game with her great tactical play and making eight saves on 27 shots. Henderson's counterpart May made seven saves on the night on 13 Winthrop shots.
Winthrop continues on the road when they take on fellow Big South Conference member VMI Saturday afternoon in Lexington, VA. Kick- off is set for 1:00 p.m.
