ROCK HILL, SC—
The men's basketball team will host Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina, Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.

After playing four of the last six games on the road, Winthrop returns home for four of its next five beginning with one of its biggest rivals in the Big South, Coastal Carolina.

Winthrop and Coastal meet for the 73rd time. The Chanticleers lead the all-time series 38-35 and hold a 29-22 advantage in regular season league games.

Two of the last three games have gone to Coastal, but three of the last five have been won by Winthrop. The Eagles won the only meeting in 2011-12 with a 67-57 victory at the Winthrop Coliseum on Feb. 11. Winthrop has also won six of the last seven meetings at the Winthrop Coliseum.

In 2011-12, the Eagles had a veteran starting line-up so many of the players in significant roles this season will be getting some of their first taste of a Coastal/Winthrop matchup.

Gideon Gamble (R-Sr.) has the most experience on the court against the Chanticleers with six games played in the series. Junior Joab Jerome has played in three of the meetings, but just a total of 33 minutes (25 coming last season). Winthrop's leading scorer, sophomore Derrick Henry, saw just one minute in last year's meeting.

Henry might be hitting his stride again as he is coming off a 14-point performance at Radford. It was  the first time in six games that Henry had scored in double-figures after doing so in nine of the first 10 games this season. He's averaging 11.5 points per game and set a career-high in assists at Radford with four.

Sophomore Andre Smith has scored in double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time since the first two games of the season. Smith had a team-high 15 points and has broken out of his shooting slump knocking down 10-of-16 from the field in the last two games and 5-of-10 behind the arc.

The Eagles are 6-3 at home on the year and 2-1 in the Big South so far. In three home games in league play the Eagles have allowed just 60 points per game.

Coastal is coming off a 73-59 victory at home over Campbell and is now 9-9 on the year and 4-3 in the league, which is 3rd in the South Division.

Senior Anthony Raffa led the team in scoring with 20 points against the Camels and it was the fourth straight game in which he's reached 20 or more points. On the year he's averaging 19.3 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 35 percen behind the arc (35-101).

Kierre Greenwood is another senior guard averaging in double-figures as he's scoring 13.1 per game while dishing out 4.5 assists as well. He's led the team in scoring four times on the year while Raffa has led the team in scoring in 13 games.

The one area of struggle this season for the Chanticleers has been winning games on the road where they are 1-7 so far. The team's lone road win came at Longwood (80-72) in their league opener. Of the seven road losses, four of them have been by less than 10 points and three of them by one possession. In four league road games the Chanticleers are averaging 65.3 points and two of the three losses were by a single possession.

Coastal is ranked in the Top 25 nationally in both rebounding and steals. They are the top defensive rebounding team in the league and have a +7.0 rebounding margin. The Chanticleers average 9.3 steals per game (2nd in the league behind Radford).

In the history of the series, the Eagles won four of the first five meetings but the series got away from them between 1989 and 1995 when Coastal won 15 straight.

For the Eagles, 24 of their 35 wins in the series have come at the Winthrop Coliseum.
