SPARTANBURG, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Wofford on Thursday evening at Snyder Field.
Following the loss, the Lady Eagles fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Wofford Terriers improve their record to 4-1 overall
The Terriers got off to a fast start with a 5
th minute goal from Emily Bougas. Bougas scored her second goal of the season after receiving a through ball from Amanda Morris. Bougas' shot was fired low and to the left of goalkeeper
Amelia Henderson.
Winthrop had an opportunity to draw even in the 23
rd minute when
Grace Radler's shot from the edge of the six-yard box was saved by Wofford goalkeeper Kara Boggs. The Lady Eagles drew even in the 36
th minute when
Imani Ervins was fouled inside the box setting up a penalty kick.
Kylene Babauta stepped to the spot and converted the opportunity putting her shot past a diving Boggs.
In an evenly matched first half, both teams took six shots. Winthrop led 4-2 in shots on goal. In the net for the Lady Eagles, Henderson registered one save while her counterpart Boggs totaled three saves.
Early in the second half the Lady Eagles had an opportunity to take the lead following a long distance shot from
Taylor Coleman. Coleman's shot struck the crossbar but fell to the feet of
Taylor Walton at the penalty spot. However, Walton's follow up attempt went high over Boggs' goal. The Terriers would take the lead in the 58
th minute on the back of a long distance shot from Annika Jansson. Jansson picked up the pass from Maureen Buff and fired from 23 yards out past a diving Ameila Henderson. The goal was Jansson's second of the season.
Winthrop had a couple more opportunities to draw even on the night. In the 76
th minute,
Devin Puckett found herself open at the top of the 18 yard-box, however, her shot was saved by Boggs.
Krystyna Freda also had an opportunity when her shot from 21 yards out got past a diving Boggs, but hit off the post and was cleared away before an oncoming Puckett could get a rebound opportunity.
The Lady Eagles were outshot 16-12 on the night. Puckett, Freda and
Jessica Logan led Winthrop with two shots on the evening. Wofford's two goals scorers, Jansson and Bougas led the way for the Terriers with four shots each. Henderson finished the game with three saves for the Lady Eagles, while Boggs finished the game with a total of four saves.
Winthrop will wrap up its four game road trip on Sunday, September 9 when they travels to Johnson City, TN to take on the East Tennessee State Buccaneers of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
