ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop women's soccer played to a 3-3 draw with High Point, Thursday evening in a back and forth affair at Eagle Field.

The Lady Eagles are now 5-4-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Big South Conference action, while High Point's record is now 2-4-6 overall and 1-0-2 in Big South Conference play.

“We really battled all night long,” said head coach Spencer Smith.  “I am really proud of our performance, it was a tough matchup.  Once High Point got their first goal they really picked up their intensity.  We responded well to their intensity, going on to get the third goal.  Overall I am proud of our performance.”

In an eventful first half, Winthrop found the back of the net twice in the first five minutes of play.  Krystyna Freda opened up the scoring for Winthrop in the 3rd minute beating a defender one-on-one at the top of the 18 yard-box before firing her shot to the left of the goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the season.  Just two and a half minutes later the Lady Eagles took a 2-0 lead on Allie VandeWater's first goal of the season.  Freda earned an assist playing her cross from the far side of the field into the oncoming VandeWater whose one touch shot flew past the goalkeeper into the near side netting.

The Panthers fought back with a pair of goals to draw even with Winthrop at halftime.  High Point's leading goal scorer Becca Hemby got on the end of a Taylor Parker corner kick heading her attempt past goalkeeper Amelia Henderson in the 27th minute.  Just two minutes later Janay Whittaker tied the score at two when she received the ball in the box and shot high over Henderson.  Amy Burch and Becca Hemby earned assists on the play.  Burch served the initial ball in from a free kick and Hemby flicked the ball onto Whittaker.

Both teams went into the break with ten shots apiece.  Henderson recorded two saves for the Lady Eagles, while Ivy Cocklereece stopped three shots for the Panthers.

Winthrop once again took the lead in the 55th minute on Taylor Coleman's first career goal.  Coleman collected a rebound off of a Taylor Walton shot, shooting past Cocklereece giving the Lady Eagles a 3-2 lead.  Walton earned her third assist of the season on the play.

High Point tied the score once again in the 62nd minute on Becca Hemby's second goal of the game.  Brooke Lisson played a ball into the box which was flicked on by Whittacker.  Hemby got on to the end of the flick from Whittaker and shot on Henderson's goal.  Henderson was able to get a hand on the ball, but it was not enough as the ball rolled over the line to tie the score at 3-3.

Winthrop had a chance to win the game in regulation in the 77th minute when Freda's shot sailed inches high over the goal.  High Point out-shot the Lady Eagles 13-5 in the second half.  Henderson made six saves in the half, while Cocklereece made one save before being subbed out for Jesse May in the 61st minute.

Winthrop controlled the play in both overtime periods out-shooting High Point 9-2 in the two overtime sessions.  The Lady Eagles' best chance in overtime came in the 107th minute when Grace Radler's shot rattled the crossbar.  The Panthers finished the game with a 25-24 advantage in shots and a 12-8 advantage in shots on-goal.  Freda led all players with nine shots, Hemby led the way with six for High Point.  Henderson finished the game saving a career high nine shots in net for Winthrop.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Sunday when they travel to Buies Creek, NC for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Campbell Camels at Eakes Athletic Complex.
