ROCK HILL, SC—The regular season comes to an end Monday evening as the Winthrop women's basketball hosts Coastal Carolina on “Senior Night”. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Winthrop will look for its second straight win and a chance to send off the team's two seniors on a high note.
Kaitlyn Rubino and
TaQuoia Hammick will be honored for their careers prior to the game.
Rubino started her career as a walk-on and eventually became a starter in her first season. She has proven to be an efficient scorer as a career 50 percent shooter. She's just three rebounds shy of 300 and passed 400 career points on Feb. 25 at Campbell. Rubino scored a career-high 16 points on Dec. 28, 2010 in a win over Southern Wesleyan and her career-high in Big South games came on Jan. 22, 2011 with 15 points at UNC Asheville.
Hammick is four points shy of joining the 500/500 club as she's got 496 career points and 555 rebounds. She is a three-year starter and is also ranked in Winthrop's All-Time Top 10 in blocks with 69. She has matched her career-high in points four times, including this season on Jan. 30 in a comeback victory over Campbell at home. Her career-high of 15 rebounds came on Jan. 16, 2010 at High Point and has 15 double-figure rebounding games in her career. Hammick has six career double-doubles.
The Eagles look for their 12
th conference victory as they host a Coastal Carolina team that handed them a 58-54 loss in the conference opener on Dec. 31, 2011. It was a game that Winthrop led by 16 points in the first half.
Winthrop has won six of the last seven games as it ends the regular season tonight. The Eagles have already clinched third place in the Big South standings and the third seed for this week's Advanced Auto Parts Big South Conference Championship.
The victory over Charleston Southern in overtime on Friday was the 17
th of the season for Winthrop, giving head coach Marlene Stollings the most wins ever by a first-year head coach in school history. The 17 wins are also the second most in a single-season by a Winthrop team at the NCAA Division I level and it's the seventh time in school history that a team has won at least 17 games.
Sophomore
Dequesha McClanahan scored seven of her game-high and career-high 33 points in overtime. It was the fourth 30-point game of the season for McClanahan and the second time she reached the mark against Charleston Southern.
McClanahan continues to lead the league in scoring at 20.8 points per game and 7.3 assists and is now just 12 points away from 1,000 in her career. If she can reach 1,000 points in the next two games, she will be just the second player ever in Big South history to do so prior to their junior season. The other is Elena Kisseleva of Liberty (1996-2000). On Friday she set the Big South single-season record for assists and looks to add to her total of 211 tonight.
Freshman
Samiya Wright had her best game as an Eagle on Friday when she scored a career-high 26 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field and 6-for-13 behind the arc. It's the second game this season Wright hit six threes. Her previous career-high of 21 points came on Feb. 18 in the win over Liberty. She is just four points shy of the 4
th most points scored by a freshman in a season at Winthrop. She is now averaging 12.9 points on the year, ranked 14
th in the league.
Junior
Diana Choibekova struggled behind the arc on Friday, going 2-for-10, and now has 115 threes on the season. She still leads the country in threes per game and total threes and is 11 shy of the NCAA record for threes in a season. Her 16.1 points per game average is second on the team and ranks 7
th in the league.
Winthrop is 6-2 at home in the Big South this season, which is already a school record for the most home league wins in a season. The Eagles are averaging 73.1 points per game at home and shooting 40 percent from the floor, but they face a defensive-minded Coastal Carolina team that is allowing 61.2 points per game in conference play.
The Chanticleers are coming off a 56-52 loss at Presbyterian College on Friday and are now 13-13 overall and 6-11 in the league. Coastal has lost five of the last six games, with the lone win coming in an upset buzzer beater against High Point.
Coastal's seeding is set for the conference tournament this week as it will be the seventh seed. A win tonight and a loss for PC to Charleston Southern would put the Chanticleers in a tie for sixth place in the standings, but PC doesn't qualify for post season.
Olivia Irick leads the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game and is shooting 39 percent from the field. She's tops on the team in three-pointers made with 40 and assists with 55. Shatia Cole is also averaging double-figures with 10.6 points per game and is also a threat behind the arc having made 32 on the year at a 35 percent mark.
Irick and Cole have combined to lead the team in scoring 20 times on the season. Irick has led the team in scoring the last six games and rebounding in three games. Irick's numbers are up to 13.1 points per game in league games. She is shooting 41 percent from the field and 39 percent behind the arc.
Winthrop leads the all-time series 38-37 and has an all-time record of 19-14 against Coastal at home. The teams have traded wins in the last six meetings and Winthrop lost 48-29 at home to Coastal in 2011.
