ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop women's basketball team will look to bounce back as it hits the road for back-to-back games over the weekend, beginning Saturday evening at Gardner-Webb.
Winthrop will take on the Runnin' Bulldogs at 5 p.m. and then two days later head to Asheville, NC to take on UNC Asheville Monday night at 7 p.m.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a home loss to Presbyterian College, 63-60, last Saturday and are currently 11-11 overall and 5-5 in the Big South. Winthrop is in fifth place in the conference standings.
The team is still averaging 70 points per game, as it looks to set a Winthrop NCAA Division I level, single-season record for best scoring average.
Winthrop was coming off an 83-73 victory on Jan. 30 before its loss to PC on Saturday.
Sophomore
Dequesha McClanahan and junior
Diana Choibekova scored in the 20's for the second time this season as McClanahan finished with 23 points and Choibekova had 22. Freshman
Samiya Wright struggled from the floor as she was 3-for-13 and finished with six points. Winthrop received seven points from its post players.
McClanahan continues to lead the league in scoring with a mark of 19.9 per game. She's also leading the conference in assists per game at 7.6, which ranks fourth nationally. Choibekova is averaging 16.2 points per game and is search of breaking the Big South Conference single season mark for three-pointers made. Choibekova currently has 90 on the year and is 18 away from breaking the record.
If Winthrop is going to start the road swing off right, it will have to win in an arena that has not been kind in four previous trips. Winthrop is 0-4 all-time at Paul Porter Arena as two of the four losses have come by a combined total of four points. The last two trips, Winthrop has lost by an average of 17 points.
In the first meeting of the season, Winthrop set a school record for threes in a game with 17 and Choibekova knocked down a school record 10 triples. That mark also tied the Big South record for most threes in a game by an individual. Those numbers helped Winthrop to an 86-48 victory, the first in the previous seven meetings.
Gardner-Webb is currently 2-19 overall and 1-9 in the Big South, with the lone conference win coming on Jan. 9 against Coastal Carolina at Paul Porter. The Runnin' Bulldogs have played five of their last seven games on the road and will be looking to end their current seven-game losing streak.
Sophomore center Catrina Green continues to lead the team offensively and on the boards as she's coming off a 19-point, 11 rebound performance at Charleston Southern. Gardner-Webb posted its best offensive output in seven games.
Green is averaging a team-best 11.3 points and 8.6 rebounds in all games this season and 13 points and 8.6 rebounds in league games. Jasmine Dale, a sophomore guard, is second on the team with 8.6 points (9.1 in league play).
Monday evening Winthrop will have a road contest at a Bulldogs squad that is 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the Big South.
