BUIES CREEK, NC— Samiya Wright's jumper with .2 seconds on the clock gave Winthrop a 67-66 overtime victory over Campbell, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference women's basketball action at the Gilbert Craig Gore Arena.
After
Dequesha McClanahan didn't get a shot to fall from the baseline with just over seven seconds left, the ball bounced out of bounds in favor of the Lady Eagles for another chance at the win. Winthrop called timeout and ran a play that gave Wright a look from just inside the three-point arc on the wing and she swished it for the win.
The Lady Eagles improved to 16-11 overall and 10-5 in the Big South. Campbell falls to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in the league. The victory gives Winthrop a school-record fifth straight in the conference and also sets a school record in conference victories in a season. The 16 wins also ties for the second most wins at the NCAA Division I level and ties head coach Marlene Stollings for the most wins by a first-year coach at Winthrop.
Campbell overcame a six-point deficit over the final five and a half minutes to tie the game with seven seconds to play in regulation when Tonisha Baker knocked down a jumper with seven seconds on the clock.
McClanahan tried to win the game in regulation as she drove the lane and hit a short jumper off a shot fake, but was called for a travel. Winthrop was able to force a turnover as Kate Cloxton lost the ball forward off the dribble and Wright picked it up as the clock ran down. Wright took a couple of dribbles and let one fly well behind the arc, but the shot was a little strong and off to the side as the horn sounded.
At that point, both teams were faced with their first overtime time games of the season.
The extra period saw Campbell build a three-point advantage at 62-59 at the 3:18 mark after Katelyn Bass scored an easy two underneath. McClanahan came right back with an answer as she drove the lane, made the hoop and was fouled in the process. McClanahan knocked down the free throw to complete the three-point play and tie the game with 2:55 left.
McClananan converted two free throws with 1:25 on the clock for a one-point lead. Campbell took its final lead with 22 seconds remaining as Bass scored inside again.
McClanahan finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh career double-double. She also dished out eight assists.
Diana Choibekova finished with a game-high 22 points as she hit six threes and in the process broke the single-season record for threes and now has 111. The previous record was 107 held by Charleston Southern's Katie Tull.
Despite leading 6-2 early, things didn't start well for Winthrop as struggled making short shots and taking care of the basketball.
The game was tied at 13-13 with 12:01 remaining after McClanahan finished going to the basket. Campbell pulled away with a 13-2 run for an 11-point advantage, 26-15, with 8:05 to play in the first half. The run started with a Bass jumper and ended with a Baker runner off the glass.
