ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Radford in the Championship Game of the Big South Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The Lady Eagles wrap up their season with a record of 12-7-2, while Radford improves to 14-2-4 and clinches the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

”First of all, I am proud of our team, proud of our girls,” said head coach Spencer Smith.  “I thought we battled hard today, it just wasn't quite enough because Radford was on top of their game.  We could never really get a flow going and we could never really connect passes and get anything really going.  We have to give Radford a lot of credit for disrupting that, but in the end this was a great group and we are definitely proud of what they accomplished this season.”

In an evenly matched first half, Radford took the lead with just 36 seconds remaining in the half.  Rachel Conway, Radford's leading goal scorer, put her laces through a shot from 20 yards out from the middle of the goal that knuckled away from the Winthrop goalkeeper.

The Lady Eagles best opportunity of the half came from Taylor Walton who ripped a shot from 35 yards out in the 39th minute of play forcing Radford's Che' Brown to make one of her three first half saves.

Just minutes into the second half Walton had an opportunity to draw even when she was one on one with Brown in the 50th minute.  However, her shot attempt sailed high over the cross bar.  In the 63rd minute the Big South Attacking Player of the Year Krystyna Freda hit a volley from the edge of the 18 yard box directly in the center of the field that was saved by Brown.

In the 84th minute Kylene Babauta's free kick was just inches too tall for Grace Radler who jumped in front of Brown who pulled in the free kick on what would prove to be Winthrop's last chance.

Freda led all players with five shots, while four different Highlanders each attempted three shots.  Winthrop goalkeepers Amelia Henderson and Sarah Schippers each made three saves splitting time in net.  Brown stopped six shots in net for Radford and was named the tournament MVP.

Juniors Okina Crawley and Megan Pritts, along with freshman Megan David were selected to the All-Tournament Team from Winthrop.
