ROCK HILL, SC—
Winthrop men's basketball begins a two-game road trip this week on the road in Spartanburg, SC to take on Wofford College Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in what is expected to be a battle at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Eagles entered the Thanksgiving break on a high note with an impressive defensive effort that lifted them to a 59-35 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne. Winthrop's been known for its defensive intensity and effort for more than a decade. The 35 points allowed ranks fifth in the program's history in points by an opponent.

The Eagles held Lenoir-Rhyne to just 27 percent shooting, which is the lowest total by an opponent since Radford shot 25 percent on March 4, 2010 in the semifinals of the Big South Conference.

Winthrop is 2-2 on the year and hopes to improve on that record with the next two contests on the road, and five of the next six on the road.

Offensively Winthrop is led by sophomore Derrick Henry's 18.8 points per game, but it was a balanced scoring attack against Lenoir-Rhyne as nine players got involved in the scoring. Red-shirt senior Gideon Gamble led the team with 12 points while Henry chipped in with 11.

Junior Joab Jerome was still hobbled by injury against Lenoir-Rhyne but put in 27 minutes with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals as he's averaging 4.7 points and 4.0 rebounds on the year. Jerome, along with the other players that were banged up, has had a week to get healthier.

James Bourne continues to be efficient offensively as he was 3-for-3 from the field against the Bears and is now 10-for-11 on the season (91 percent).

This will be the first time since the Eagles became a member of the NCAA Division I level that they will face Wofford. The last meeting came on Feb. 9, 1985 in Benjamin Johnson Arena. Winthrop won the first six meetings and holds an 11-3 lead in the all-time series.

The Terriers are 2-5 on the year, but have played a solid schedule and six of the seven games away from home. In fact, Wofford opens the season with 11 of its first 14 games away from home.

It is a young Terrier squad led by sophomore guard Karl Cochran, who is averaging 16.1 points per game as well as 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals. Cochran is one of three players averaging double-figures as sophomore Lee Skinner and freshman Spencer Collins are averaging 11.7 and 11.0 points per game respectively. There are 13 underclassmen out of 15 players on the roster this year for Wofford.

Cochran, the 2011-12 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, scored 20-plus points in the first two games of the season (three times in seven games) and scored in double-figures in the first six games. He only had seven points on 3-of-12 shooting in the team's 49-37 loss at UNC Wilmington on Nov. 24.

Through the first seven games it's been either Cochran or Skinner to lead the team in scoring.
