FARMVILLE, VA – Winthrop fought back from a halftime deficit but falls for the first time in Big South Conference action, 2-1 in overtime, Thursday evening at Longwood.
The Lady Eagles' record drops to 6-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Big South Conference play, while the Lancers improve to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in conference action.
Grace Radler found a 65
th minute equalizer for Winthrop after collecting Taylor Waltons' cross in the middle of the 18-yard box and shooting low past the Longwood goalkeeper. It would not be enough to earn the Lady Eagles an away result as Kylie Dyer, daughter of Lancer head coach Todd Dyer scored the game-winning goal in the 94
th minute.
Playing without the services of
Krystyna Freda, the Lady Eagles fell behind in the 22
nd minute of play on Kelsey McDonald's second goal of the season. McDonald's goal was assisted by the Lancers' leading scorer Kelsey Pardue. Longwood had a couple of opportunities to extend its lead if not for a pair of saves from
Amelia Henderson. McDonald had a one-on-one opportunity in the 26
th minute and then in the 31
st minute, Henderson's diving save kept Chelsea Walters' shot out of the net.
The Lancers ended the match with a 14-6 advantage in shots and a 6-3 margin in shots on-goal. McDonald and Lindsey Ottavio led all players with three shots, while Radler led Winthrop with two shots. Henderson finished with four saves in net for Winthrop, while Krya
