ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team looks to move into one of the top four spots in the Big South conference for the upcoming conference tournament with games at Presbyterian and Asheville.
The Lady Eagles are currently 7-6-2 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play which ranks them fifth in the conference standings. In order to host a first round game in the conference tournament, which starts October 27
th, Winthrop needs to finish as one of the top four seeds. Presbyterian enters the match with a record of 2-13 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
Winthrop leads the all-time series 4-0-1 and has won four straight. Last season Winthrop needed a second half rally to top the Blue Hose at Eagle Field.
Tori Davis and
Krystyna Freda scored goals 11 seconds apart to overcome a one goal deficit.
The Lady Eagles will look to improve its position when it travels to Presbyterian on Thursday, October 18
th, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Blue Hose at Martin Stadium.
Freda, the Preseason Attacking Player of the Year leads the team with 10 goals this season, which ranks her second in the Big South Conference.
Grace Radler and
Devin Puckett are tied for second with four goals each, while Radler's five assist tie her for the team lead in assists with freshman
Taylor Walton. Co-captain
Allie VandeWater has pitched in with four assist.
Amelia Henderson has played the majority of minutes in the net for the Lady Eagles this season making 57 saves with a 1.49 goals-against average.
The Blue Hose are led offensively by Sara Simpson who leads the team in every offensive category with 11 points, four goals, and three assists. Tori Lopez is tied with Simpson for the team lead in goals with four of her own. Goalkeeper Jordan Broadway is 1-8 on the year with 67 saves and a .770 save percentage.
Winthrop will then travel to Asheville on Saturday, October 20
th for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff with the Asheville Bulldogs at the Greenwood Soccer Field. The Bulldogs are 3-13 overall with a 1-7 mark in conference.
Asheville holds a 4-8-1 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, the Lady Eagles walked away with a 3-1 victory against the Bulldogs. Freda had a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal, as Winthrop fought back from a 1-0 first half deficit.
Asheville is led by Kaitlyn Eckert's eight goals and five assists for the season. Eckert is not the only offensive threat as three other Bulldogs are tied for second with four goals. Paige Trent is second to Eckert on the team with three assists. Heather Muller has played every minute in goal for Asheville. Muller has recorded 110 saves this season, while letting in 54 goals.
