Krystyna Freda scored her tenth goal of the season and 26
th of her young career to move her into a first place tie for the most goals in school history. It was not enough as Radford got a late goal to tie Winthrop 1-1, on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Lady Eagles are now 7-6-2 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play. Radford is undefeated in its last 11 games and are now 10-2-2 overall and 6-0-2 in the Big South and remain in first place.
“I thought we played well today,” said head coach
Spencer Smith. “At times we played good soccer; we strung passes together at times and created some good chances. We are disappointed not to get three points but one point is not all bad.” Referring to the eight seniors honor on senior day, Smith said, “Our seniors were fantastic today. They have been a great group and tremendous for the program.”
Krystyna Freda opened up the scoring in the 78
th minute of play when she beat her defender one-on-one and took her shot from the far side edge of the 18-yard box flew over the goalkeeper and into the near side netting. Freda's goal is her 10
th of the season and 26
th of her career which ties her with Chelsea White (2005-08) for first in school history.
The Highlanders pulled even on an 89
th minute goal from Tyler Drake, her first of the season. Drake got on the end of a Mary Wiley corner kick to nod in the tying goal.
The Lady Eagles finished with a 20-14 advantage in shots. Freda led all players with seven shots followed by
Allie VandeWater with six. Mary Wiley led Radford with five. Both goalkeepers,
Sarah Schippers and Che' Brown finished with four saves.
Winthrop returns to action on Thursday, October 18 when it travels to Clinton, SC for a 7:00 p.m. contest with Presbyterian at Martin Field.
