ROCK HILL, SC—The women's basketball team looks for its second win in a row as it hosts Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
Winthrop is coming off a win in which it rallied from nine points down to defeat a Campbell team that was riding a four-game winning streak. The Lady Eagles improved to 11-10 and are now 5-4 in the league, tied with Campbell and Charleston Southern for third place in the Big South standings.
After turning in one of its lowest outputs of the season on Saturday against High Point, Winthrop started off slow against Campbell and trailed by six at the half before posting a season-high 50 points in the second half. The Lady Eagles reached 80-plus points for the third time in four conference home games.
The last time Winthrop had three games with 80 or more points in league games came in 2001-02. That season's team posted four conference games in the 80's and were a perfect 4-0 in those games. Winthrop is 3-0 when it scores 80 or more in league games this season and 7-0 overall.
Sophomore
Dequesha McClanahan had an extremely productive night for the Lady Eagles on Monday. McClanahan finished with 23 points and dished out a career-high 15 assists. It was the fifth time this season she's had 10 or more assists in a single game and the 15 tied the Winthrop Division I record for most in a game. Sheila Bailey recorded 15 three different times, including a league game against Charleston Southern on Jan. 9, 1991. An incredible number to go along with the 15 assists is she committed just two turnovers.
McClanahan had her hand in 58 of the 83 points that Winthrop scored as she assisted on five of the team's six three-pointers. It was the third straight game in which she's scored 20 or more and the 11
th time on the season.
Diana Choibekova failed to reach double-figures in scoring on Monday as she finished with nine points on 3-for-14 shooting. It was the first time all-season that Winthrop scored in the 80's without at least 15 points from Choibekova. It was also the first time all season in which she's gone back-to-back games without scoring in double-figures. She now has 85 three-pointers on the year and is averaging 4.0 threes per game. She is 23 threes shy of passing the Big South single-season mark and has at least 10 games to try and reach that mark. She would need to average 2.3 per game the rest of the way in order to be the new record holder.
Choibekova is second on the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game and despite struggling from the field the last two games, is still shooting 40 percent from the field and 37 percent behind the arc in four home conference games.
Samiya Wright is coming off a 17-point performance in which she broke out of her shooting slump. Wright missed her first three shots on Monday as she was 6-for-33 before knocking down six of her next eight shots, including a three late that put Winthrop in front by nine points. She's averaging 12-3 points on the year and shooting 46 percent behind the arc.
Winthrop as a team is averaging 76.5 points per game at home and shooting 41 percent from the field and 36 percent behind the arc. Winthrop has outrebounded opponents 45.2-37.2 at home and is averaging 16.8 assists to 14.5 turnovers.
Over the weekend, senior
TaQuoia Hammick surpassed the 500 career rebound plateau and now has 504 in her career. She became the 92
nd player in Big South history to reach 500 rebounds and the 13
th player in Winthrop history.
Winthrop welcomes a Presbyterian College team that is riding a four-game losing streak. The Lady Eagles won the matchup in Clinton, SC on Jan. 7, 70-62 as McClanahan turned in a 32-point performance.
The Blue Hose are 8-12 on the year and 2-7 in the league. After falling to the Lady Eagles on Jan. 7, Presbyterian College reeled off back-to-back wins, but has had a tough schedule over the last few weeks facing the top three teams in the Big South.
Junior Mariah Pietrowski, who had 12 points and five rebounds in the first meeting, is leading PC in scoring at 10.9 per game. She's upped that a little bit in league play at 11.4 per game and is shooting 55 percent from the floor. Sophomore Karlee Taylor is leading the team in scoring in league games at 11.7 per game (9.8 per game on the season). Taylor is a three-point threat (46-for-123), which ranks third in the league at 2.3 per game.
On the season, Presbyterian College is averaging 54.2 points per game and is 6-2 when scoring 60 or more points in a game.
Winthrop is one of three teams in the league averaging 70 or more points per game on the year, but faces a Presbyterian College team that ranks first in the Big South and would rank 37
th in the country allowing 55 points per game. The Blue Hose are second in the league in field goal percentage defense.
The Lady Eagles have won the last two meetings and is 12-3 all-time against Presbyterian College. However, PC won the previous meeting in the Winthrop Coliseum, 55-40 in 2011.
