ROCK HILL, SC— Midway through the second half, Winthrop used a 12-4 run to overcome a seven-point deficit and bring the two-game losing streak to an end in an 83-73 victory over Campbell, Monday evening in Big South Conference women's basketball action.
The victory lifts the Lady Eagles over .500 on the season at 11-10 and improves their Big South record to 5-4. It's the first ever victory over Campbell in a league game as it ends a streak of 16 straight losses. Campbell was 16-0 against Winthrop before leaving the league in 1994 and returning in 2011.
The loss brings the Camels four-game win streak to an end as they fall to 12-8 on the year and 5-4 in the league.
Katelyn Bass knocked down a jumper in the lane with 9:48 remaining in the game for a 59-52 lead for the Camels. After two free throws from Katie Fitzgerlad cut the lead to five points,
Dequesha McClanahan took over the game. The sophomore guard scored 10 straight points, including back-to-back three-point baskets on drives to the hole. The third basket and a foul gave Winthrop a 64-63 lead with 5:24 to play and capped off the 10-4 run by McClanahan.
Campbell missed on the ensuing possession and McClanahan found
Taylor Calvert in transition for an easy two and a three-point advantage, 66-63. After Bass hit two free throws, Winthrop scored 12 straight points, capped off by a second chance opportunity with a three-pointer from
Samiya Wright on the wing. That put Winthrop ahead, 72-63 with 3:47 to go.
McClanahan finished with a game-high 23 and tied the school's Division I record for assists in a single game with 15, which is held by Sheila Bailey. She had just two turnovers.
Over the final 10 minutes of the game, Winthrop outscored the Camels 31-16 and shot 67 percent from the field with just one turnover. Campbell was 5-for-15 (33 percent) during the final 10 minutes and committed five turnovers.
Campbell shot its way to a 39-33 halftime advantage with a 52 percent mark from the field. The Camels were 6-for-11 behind the arc and held Winthrop to just 34 percent shooting in the first half.
Winthrop opened the scoring with a
Diana Choibekova three from the wing, but that was quickly matched by a Kate Cloxton triple and Bass scored inside a few possessions later for a 5-3 lead. Campbell built itself a four point advantage at the 17:33 mark, but couldn't pull away any further and Winthrop fought back for a 17-16 lead with 12:26 to play in the first.
The teams traded baskets before a couple of times before Campbell built a six point lead with 6:34 to go and a nine-point lead with under four and a half remaining. Back-to-back threes from McClanahan and Wright cut the lead to three, but Campbell worked its way back to a six-point halftime advantage.
Campbell tried to open the game up in the second half, gaining leads of eight on two different occasions and even led by seven with 10:45 to play. However, Winthrop got its offense going and ended up handing Campbell its first loss of the season when leading at the half. The Camels are now 10-1 with a halftime lead.
Fitzgerald, who's put back with 10:06 remaining cut the lead to five and an offensive rebound led to the three from Wright for a nine-point advantage, finished with six points and four rebounds off the bench.
TaQuoia Hammick scored eight points in each half as she tied her career-best of 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting.
Bass led Campbell as she posted a career-high in points with 20 and assists with five. Amanda O'Neill connected on three three-pointers and finished with a season-best 13 points. Tonisha Baker recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and also had two assists, three blocks and three steals. Cloxton turned in nine points and nine assists.
Wright also scored in double-figures with 17 points as she was 6-for-11 from the field after missing her first three shots and four of her first five. She also had four rebounds and three steals.
Winthrop will remain at home for its next contest when Presbyterian College comes to town on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip is set for 1 p.m. Campbell returns home to begin a three-game home stand on Saturday, Feb. 4 when it takes on Liberty at 1 p.m.
