ROCK HILL, SC— Coming off a tough home loss to league-leading High Point Saturday afternoon, the Winthrop women's basketball team looks to get back on track when it hosts Campbell Monday evening at 7 p.m.
Winthrop is currently in the middle of a two-game skid in which the team has only averaged 51 points per game and combined to shoot just 28 percent. The 49 points at Liberty last Monday was the team's lowest offensive output of the season and Winthrop followed that with a 53-point performance at home on Saturday against High Point. The team, prior to the two-game losing streak was shooting over 40 percent from the field on the season
The Lady Eagles (10-10, 4-4 Big South) look to right the ship Monday evening when they host a Campbell team that has won three straight and sits all alone in third place in the Big South Conference standings. Campbell is 12-7 overall on the year and 5-3 in the league. A victory would put Winthrop in a tie for third with Campbell as Charleston Southern at 5-4, is idle.
Besides the struggles shooting the ball, Winthrop has also done a worse job taking care of the basketball, something the team had done well all season. Prior to the last three games, Winthrop was averaging just 14.7 turnovers per game and had not committed 20 or more in 10 straight games. Winthrop has done so twice in the last three games and teams have turned that into an average of 21.3 points off turnovers. Winthrop's opponents have forced nearly 20 in the last two games and have outscored the Lady Eagles 39-9 off turnovers during the losing streak.
Over the last two games, two of Winthrop's top scorers have struggled shooting the ball. Junior
Diana Choibekova has averaged 11 points the last two on 8-for-42 shooting (19 percent). She's 6-for-34 behind the arc (18 percent).
Samiya Wright averaged 7.0 points on 3-for-20 shooting from the field (15 percent) and 13 percent behind the arc (1-for-8).
Sophomore
Dequesha McClanahan has shot 34 percent from the field and averaged 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds, but has also averaged 8.0 turnovers. McClanahan is averaging 22.0 points over the last two games. McClanahan continues to lead the conference in scoring at 19.6 per game and in assists per game at 7.4.
Prior to the home loss to High Point on Saturday, Winthrop had been averaging 72.9 points on 42 percent shooting from the field in eight home games (5-3 record). The team was also shooting 37 percent behind the arc. In fact, the previous two home games in league play, Winthrop posted over 80 points. The team was allowing 59.5 points per game and just held the Panthers under that mark, but offensively the team struggled.
The team will need to regain its form against Campbell, which is riding a three-game winning streak and coming off its second road win of the season and first in league play.
The Camels are averaging 64.8 points on 41 percent shooting in 19 games this season and are led by junior Tonisha Baker's 13.3 points per game. Baker is shooting 42 percent and has a team-best 52 steals. Her 2.74 steals per game is best in the Big South and 59
th nationally. Baker also leads the team in rebounding and is one of three teammates averaging six or more rebounds per game (6.5). Baker has led the team in points eight times on the year and Campbell is 5-3 in those games.
Katelyn Bass, a senior forward, is second on the team with 10.4 points per game and 6.0 rebounds. Bass is shooting 48 percent from the field, which ranks seventh best in the conference. Bass has led the team in scoring four times on the season and the Camels are 3-1 when she does.
Senior guard Kate Cloxton is the team's leader in assists per game and is second in the league at 5.3 per game. Cloxton is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.5 points and leads the team with 28 made threes.
Campbell is a perfect 8-0 at home this season and 2-7 on the road but the difference in those games isn't the Camels offense. Campbell averages 65.8 points per game at home and 64.4 in road games. Defensively, Campbell allows 52.4 points at home and 71.1 points on the road. Baker has led the team in scoring in four road games while Jazmine Cooper, a junior post player, has led the team three times on the road.
In conference games only, Campbell is averaging 68 points at home and 62.3 on the road while allowing just 56.3 points at home and 72.8 on the road.
This is the first time Winthrop and Campbell have met in a conference match-up since Feb. 11, 1994 at the Winthrop Coliseum. Campbell won that game 75-49 and leads the all-time series 19-4. Winthrop won the last meeting two seasons ago at Campbell, 66-60, but the Camels have won three of the last five meetings. Winthrop is 0-16 all-time in Big South games against Campbell.
