RADFORD, VA--- The Winthrop women's basketball team captured its fourth straight Big South Conference victory as it held on to defeat Radford, 66-64, Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.
Winthrop (10-8, 4-2 BSC) held off a furious rally attempt by the Highlanders, who turned an 11-point Winthrop lead into a one-point deficit with 17 seconds remaining in the game. Radford took advantage of turnovers late and hit back-to-back threes by Ayanna Avery to make it a 65-64 lead with 16.6 seconds on the clock.
Radford was forced to foul
Diana Choibekova at midcourt after a successful inbound and went to the line for a one-and-one with 13.1 to play. Choibekova calmly knocked down the first free throw, but the second one bounced out. Players fought for the ball and
Kaitlyn Rubino was able to get her hands on the ball and hold on long enough to get a jump ball call, which went in favor of the Lady Eagles.
Dequesha McClanahan was fouled and forced to the line for a one-and-one, but her attempt bounced out and Radford boarded the miss. The Highlanders quickly moved the ball up looking for a chance to tie or win the game. The ball found its way into the hands of Avery, who had just hit two threes. Avery received the ball behind the arc as time was running out and launched a shot that hit off the back of the rim and into the hands of
TaQuoia Hammick as the buzzer sounded.
Choibekova finished with a game-high 25 points and pulled down a career-high 12 boards as she went 8-for-18 from the field and 6-for-12 behind the arc. In the process, Choibekova became Winthrop's single season record holder for threes in a season, surpassing Tiffany Rodd's record of 74 in the 2007-08 season. This record came one game after she broke her own record for three-pointers in a single game with 10 in the win over Gardner-Webb.
Hammick was the only other Lady Eagle in double-figures as she came off the bench for 12 points and four rebounds. McClanahan finished with eight points, but tied her career-high in assists with 12. It's the fourth time on the year she's reached double-figures in assists and the third time in four games.
The first half saw Radford build a couple of nine point leads with the last one coming with 7:30 remaining after an Ashia Holmes put back right in front of the basket. Despite trailing by nine twice,
McClanahan picked up her second foul with 5:15 remaining and Winthrop trailing 25-20. At that point, the Lady Eagles ended the half on a 10-4 run, which included nine straight points. The nine consecutive points were capped off by a Choibekova three.
Defensively Winthrop held the Highlanders to just two points over the final five minutes, which included no points in a four and a half minute span.
Radford was led by Ashley Buckhannon's 19 points as she connected on three triples and also had five rebounds. Da'Naria Erwin Spencer finished with just eight points, six in the second half.
Winthrop has a quick turnaround as it heads to Lynchburg, VA to take on Liberty University, Monday night at 7 p.m. Radford will host Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. Monday night.
