LYNCHBURG, VA— Winthrop enters Monday night's road contest against Liberty riding a four-game win streak and an opportunity to move into a tie for second place in the Big South Conference standings.
In order to extend its current winning streak, Winthrop will have to take down a tough Liberty team it hasn't defeated since the 2007-08 season. The Lady Flames have won the last seven meetings. The last 14 trips to the Vines Center have been double-figure losses.
Winthrop is 10-8 overall on the year and sits in third place in the conference standings with a 4-2 league mark. Liberty is 10-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference, having won four straight by an average of 25.3 points. The Lady Flames only blemish in conference play came at home on Jan. 7 in overtime to High Point.
The Lady Eagles have been on a tear offensively averaging 76.8 points per game in the last five games and 74.6 in the last 10. Over the last five games, Winthrop is shooting 46 percent as a team and 42 percent behind the arc.
Both
Dequesha McClanahan and
Diana Choibekova are averaging 20 points per game in that stretch at 20.6 and 20.8 respectively. McClanahan has done her damage inside and out and she's also been dishing the rock at 10 assists per game. She's coming off 12 assists at Radford, which tied her career-high. She has 50 assists in her last five games.
Choibekova, who broke the Winthrop single-season record for threes on Saturday at Radford, has really stepped up her game. Over the last five games she's shooting 43 percent from the floor and 44 percent from three. She's also been the team's leader on the boards, averaging 7.4 in that stretch and she pulled down a career-high 12 boards at Radford Saturday.
The third scoring threat,
Samiya Wright, has been averaging 12.8 points over the last five games and is shooting 46 percent behind the arc. She's also averaged 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals.
TaQuioa Hammick and
Kaitlyn Rubino haven't been putting up huge numbers like the scoring trio of McClanahan, Choibekova and Wright, however, the two have been extremely efficient. Hammick is scoring 7.1 points while shooting 71 percent from the field on the season. Rubino is averaging 4.9 points on the year and shooting 65 percent. Rubino has averaged 6.0 points and shooting 83 percent from the field in the last five games.
Liberty features a couple of the league's best players, including the 2011-12 Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year in Avery Warley. The 6-3 senior is averaging 16 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in six league games. On the season, Warley is averaging 14.6 points and 10.8 rebounds overall this season and is shooting 62 percent from the floor. Junior Devin Brown provides an inside and outside presence as she leads the team in scoring at 17.3 points per game. Brown and Warley are both solid free throw shooters at 76 and 75 percent.
Brown is also a strong rebounder at 6.6 per game as that is tied for second on the team with Tolu Omotola. Liberty led the nation as of Friday in rebounding margin at +16.8 as Warley, Brown and Omotola all rank among the Top 10 rebounders in the league.
This game will feature the second best scoring team in the league (Winthrop) and the third best scoring team in the league (Liberty).
McClanahan currently leads the conference in scoring at 19.3 points per game and Brown is second at 17.3 ppg. Choibekova is third in scoring at 16.8.
Liberty is currently second in scoring defense in the league and first in field goal percentage defense.
