ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team opens the home portion of its 2011 Big South Conference schedule on Saturday evening as it takes on the Campbell Camels at 7 p.m.
The Eagles (5-4, 1-0) are winners of their last three matches, including a record-setting 7-2 win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in the conference opener on Sept. 27. Winthrop set numerous school records against the Runnin' Bulldogs, while also winning its first road game of the season. The Eagles notched their first goal of the match in just 23 seconds to go ahead 1-0, with the NCAA record for fastest goal to begin a match four seconds set by Yael Averbuch of North Carolina against Yale in 2006.
Krystyna Freda recorded her first career hat trick at Gardner-Webb, and is the first for Winthrop since 2007 overall and 2003 in Big South play. Her hat trick was earned in six minutes and 38 seconds, and the NCAA record for fastest hat trick is held by current US National Women's Soccer Team member Abby Wambach who picked up her hat trick in two minutes and two seconds. Freda set a school record for a second time this season for shots in a match with 10, while
Courtney Durbin dished out a school record three assists. The seven goals scored by the Eagles are the most in program history for a conference game, and is second-most overall.
Winthrop leads the Big South with 24 goals on the season, a 2.67 average, and has already surpassed its goal total of 20 from 2010. Freda and Durbin top the goals and assists categories, respectively, while goalkeeper
Sarah Schippers ranks first in save percentage.
Freda's seven goals are second in school history by a freshman as Whitney Sanders set the mark of 11 goals in 2003. She leads the Eagles in goals, points (14) and shots (46). Her shot total also leads the conference and is tied for third-most in a season in the team's history. Durbin has dished out five assists on the season, and needs just one more to tie the school record of six set by Erin Foote in 2006 and Chelsea White in 2007.
Schippers has allowed 13 goals on the season for a 1.57 GAA to go with her 50 saves and .794 save percentage.
The Camels (7-3, 1-0) are coming off a 3-0 over Gardner-Webb on Thursday evening to open their conference season, and are rejoining the Big South Conference after previously being a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. They are coached by Todd Clark, who is in his 14
th season overall as a coach and sixth at Campbell. He holds a career coaching record of 134-93-1 and is 32-60-8 with the Camels.
Campbell is led offensively by Ashley Clark with six goals on the season, while Pirjo Leppikangas has a team-high 15 points on five goals and five assists. Goalie Ryann Torrero has given up 11 goals on the year for a 1.09 goals against average, while snagging 42 saves for a save percentage of .792.
The contest on Saturday night between Winthrop and the Camels will be just the third all-time meeting, with the last one taking place in 2006. The all-time series is tied 1-1, with the Eagles walking away with a 1-0 win at Eagle Field in the last meeting. Campbell won the first meeting 2-1 in overtime during the 2005 season.
