ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will begin the Big South Conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday evening when it travels to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs at Greene-Harbison Soccer Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The conference opener for both teams will mark the eighth all-time meeting between both the Eagles and Runnin' Bulldogs, with Gardner-Webb holding a 5-2 advantage in the series. Winthrop has won the last two meetings, including 2-1 in Rock Hill last season to open conference play. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the first four meetings, which began in 2003, while the Eagles have yet to win in Boiling Springs.
Winthrop will be looking for its first road win of the 2011 season, and is 4-4 overall heading into the conference opener. It has won two games in row against East Tennessee State 2-1 in double-overtime and 4-2 over South Carolina State at home. The Eagles are led offensively this season by
Krystyna Freda with eight points on four goals, and is first on the team and the Big South with 36 total shots.
Rachel Webster has dished out a team-high three assists, while
Courtney Durbin is tied with Freda at eight points. Goalkeeper
Sarah Schippers ranks in the top five for the conference in goals against average, saves and save percentage. She has allowed 11 goals for a 1.47 GAA to go with her 47 saves and .810 save percentage.
Gardner-Webb is coached by Kevin Mounce, who is in his 13
th season with the program and has compiled a career record of 156-146-22 overall and 108-112-18 mark with the Runnin' Bulldogs. The team is led on offense by Dawn Rollyson, who has six of the team's 13 goals on the season. Her 12 points are also tops on the team, while six different players have one assist each. Goalie Erika Lenns has given up 14 goals overall for a goals against average of 1.70, and has 42 saves for a .750 save percentage.
Heading into the contest, Winthrop ranks tied for first in the conference for shots, second in points and goals, third in assists and first in saves. In the same categories, Gardner-Webb is eighth in shots, fourth in points and goals, tied for eighth in assists and fifth in saves. The Eagles are tied for fifth in goals allowed, while the Runnin' Bulldogs are seventh.
