Box Score

LEXINGTON, VA –
The third-seeded Charleston Southern Buccaneers received a complete game outing from Stew Brase on Wednesday evening as it defeated the fourth-seeded Winthrop Eagles 9-3 at Gray-Minor Stadium on day two of the 2011 Royal Purple Big South Baseball Championship.

The Eagles fall to 27-29 on the season, while the Buccaneers improve to 29-28 overall.

Brase (6-7) allowed three runs on the evening (one earned) on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Tyler Mizenko (5-3) took the loss surrendering six runs on nine hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

”I think our guys really competed out there today,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “Tyler Mizenko did not have his best stuff, but he was out there competing and gave us his best effort. We just came up a little short today. Charleston Southern played well, and you have to give them credit. The whole key right now is we have to make sure our minds are right for tomorrow. We have to have a positive attitude.”

Charleston Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Winthrop in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs on an RBI ground out by Nick Chinners and Walt Quattlebaum's RBI single to right field with two outs.

Cam Walters tied the contest at 2-2 for the Eagles in the top of the third inning with his two RBI double down the right field line, but the Buccaneers responded with three runs of their own and re-gained the lead at 5-2 in the bottom of the third. Derek Smith started the scoring for Charleston Southern with his RBI double down the left field line, and Matt Still posted an RBI single two batters later. Still then came home on Tom Burkett's RBI double down the left field line.

The Buccaneers extended their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a Jaren Sustar RBI single up the middle plating Drew Woodall. Woodall led off the sixth with a walk, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brantley Meier and an Alex Tomasovich ground out.

Winthrop trimmed its deficit to 6-3 in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to left field by Patrick Gamblin to start the inning. The long ball was his third of the season, and now ties him for second place on the team in that category.

Charleston Southern answered back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-3 game. Smith began the inning for the Buccaneers with his leadoff double down the right field line, and then came home in the next at-bat on an RBI single to center field by Quattlebaum. Meier plated Quattlebaum with his RBI sacrifice fly to center field three batters later, and Sustar added an RBI single to left field with two outs.

TJ Olesczuk led the Eagles offensively with three hits on the evening, while Walters had a team-high two RBI. Quattlebaum went 3-for-5 for Charleston Southern, and had two RBI along with Sustar.

Winthrop will be back in action on Thursday, May 26 as it will play the top-seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at 3 p.m.
