Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to the 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles fall to 25-27 on the season and 13-11 in Big South play, while the Chanticleers improve to 34-17 overall and 18-6 in the conference.

Matt Rein (8-2) pitched a complete game three-hit performance to pick up the victory on one walk and four strikeouts. Matteo D'Angelo (4-7) took the loss tossing 7.0 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits, no walks and one strikeout.

“You're disappointed right now because you had a chance to sweep a really good team and help yourself in the conference, but the body of work that was done this weekend was real encouraging,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “We played hard today. We didn't beat ourselves and competed in all nine innings. The breaks just didn't go our way today.”

Coastal Carolina jumped ahead of Winthrop 3-0 after three complete innings scoring one run in the second and two in the third. The lone run in the second inning for the Chanticleers came on an RBI single to left field by Tucker Frawley, while Tommy La Stella and Daniel Bowman each had an RBI in the third. La Stella posted an RBI single and Bowman an RBI double.

Rich Witten gave Coastal Carolina a 4-0 lead with his RBI single in the top of the seventh inning, and Bowman increased the Chanticleers advantage to 5-0 in their half of the ninth with his RBI single.

Tyler Cook, Cam Walters and Chas Crane recorded all three hits for the Eagles on the afternoon. La Stella and Bowman posted three hits each for Coastal Carolina, while Bowman had a team-high two RBI.

Winthrop will be back in action on Tuesday, May 17 with a 6 p.m. contest against the Charlotte 49ers at Hayes Stadium. It will be the last regular season road game for the Eagles in 2011.
