Baseball Back In Action On Wednesday Evening Against Wake Forest

Eagles Travel To Radford This Weekend

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will return to the baseball diamond on Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. showdown with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles enter the contest with a 17-16 overall record after falling on Tuesday evening to the Furman Paladins 4-3 at Latham Stadium in Greenville, SC. The Demon Deacons are currently 13-20 on the season and play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Wake Forest leads the all-time series over Winthrop 8-6, after sweeping the Eagles in two games during the 2009 season. Winthrop won the first-ever meeting over the Demon Deacons 11-10 on May 1, 1996 in Winston-Salem, NC. The Eagles have dropped the last three meetings with Wake Forest, with all three contests being decided by two runs each time. The series is tied at 4-4 in games played in Rock Hill.

Eddie Rohan leads numerous offensive categories for the Eagles with a .375 average, 23 RBI, 62 total bases, and is tied for first with Adam Gliebe at two home runs. His nine doubles also are a team-high.

On the mound, Matteo D'Angelo and Eric Ruth top the Winthrop pitching staff at four wins each. Tyler Mizenko has a team-low opposing average of .253, while Robert Lake posts a team-best 51.2 innings pitched. D'Angelo, Mizenko and Lake have all made eight starts this season for the Eagles.

The Demon Deacons are under the direction of head coach Tom Walter, who is in his second year with the Wake Forest baseball program. It is led offensively by Mac Williamson with seven home runs on the season, 68 total bases and a .317 average, while Matt Conway has driven in a team-leading 30 RBI during the 2011 season. The Demon Deacons are hitting .226 as a team.

The Wake Forest pitching staff is led by Tim Cooney and Michael Dimock with three wins, and Cooney has complied an ERA of 2.52 ERA for starting pitchers in 53.2 innings thrown. Dimock leads all relievers with a 1.80 ERA in 25.0 innings pitched.

Winthrop will travel to Radford, VA this weekend for a three-game Big South Conference series with the Radford Highlanders. All three games will be played at Radford University Baseball Field. Game times are Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
