ROCK HILL, SC-- Winthrop women's hoops finishes the regular season with a road game at Charleston Southern Monday night at 7 p.m. at the CSU Fieldhouse.
It is a game that could decide between the sixth and seventh seeds in next week's Big South Conference Championship.
Tonight the Lady Eagles face a Charleston Southern team also fighthing for a chance to finish fourth in the regular season standings.
Winthrop will need a win tonight and a loss by UNC Asheville at High Point in order to snag the sixth seed.
Charleston Southern has won three of its last five games, including a victory over league-leading Liberty at home on Feb. 28, but is coming off a loss at home to Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The Buccaneers will be looking to avenge a loss to the Lady Eagles on Jan. 8.
When these two teams met in early January, Winthrop scored a conference season-high 75 points and was led by
Dequesha McClanahan's 19 points as
Mary Hathaway chipped in with 11 and
Kaitlyn Rubino had 10. Defensively Winthrop held CSU to 53 points and just 5-for-20 from behind the arc. CSU is currently ranked sixth nationally in made threes per game with 8.1. Senior Katie Tull leads the league in scoring and is second nationally in threes made per game at 3.4. Tull scored 13 points in the first meeting on 3-for-10 shooting, but was 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Winthrop held the Bucs to 33 percent shooting for the game, while Winthrop shot 56 percent and scored 40 of its 75 points in the paint.
After losing at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, the Lady Eagles have now lost four straight.
McClanahan had a strong performance against the Runnin' Bulldogs as she poured in a game-high 17 points and had four assists to no turnovers, but was 5-for-17 from the field. The rest of the team was 10-for-32. It was the first game of her career she didn't commit a single turnover. Pretty impressive when you consider the competition she faced in Dominique and Monique Hudson, who have a combined 152 steals on the year.
Hathaway continue to struggle to find her stroke as she came off the bench for the first time this season and was 0-for-4 from the field. She is now 0-for-12 from the field in her last three games and hasn't scored more than five points in the last six games. Winthrop is 8-3 when Hathaway scores seven or more points this season. Hathaway averaged 7.1 points per game in non-conference action and is down to 5.1 in 15 league games.
Kaitlyn Rubino didn't score in the game at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, but has had success in her career against the Bucs with a 9.3 ppg average and 6.3 rebounds. She's 13-for-27 in three meetings from the field.
So far Winthrop is 3-4 in league play on the road and averaging 53 points while allowing almost 61. The team shoots 39 percent from the field and holds opponents to the same mark, but has been outscored by 24 free throws.
McClanahan averages 15.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 40 percent in league games on the road.
TaQuoia Hammick is averaging 7.4 points and 9.7 rebounds while shooting 49 percent.
CSU has two other players averaging double-figures in senior Kelsey Wasmer and sophomore Lakeitha Alston. Wasmer averages 14.7 points and has knocked down 63 three-pointers on the season and is also averaging 7.1 rebounds. Alston is averaging 11.8 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 48 percent from the field. Wasmer had 12 points in the first meeting and Alston had 11.
The Bucs have been tough at home this season at 9-3 with the three loss coming in three of the last four home games.
