BRONX, NY—
Winthrop couldn't overcome 13 three-pointers by Fordham as it fell 76-53, Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action.

Winthrop falls to 4-6 on the year as it ends a two-game win streak while Fordham improves to 7-4.

The Rams, who entered the game shooting 31 percent from behind the arc, got hot from three and never cooled off as they finished the game 13-for-24 (54 percent). The 13 three-pointers made tied a school record for the Rams, which they set on Jan. 29, 2011 against Duquesne.

The Rams jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Samiya Wright put the Eagles on the scoreboard at the 15:54 mark on a lay-in. Wright scored the Eagles next basket at the 14:37 mark with another lay-in to make it a six-point game (10-4).

It wasn't until the 13:21 mark that Fordham knocked down its first three, but then it used the deep ball to open up the game. It was Becky Peters that hit the triple for the first double-figure lead of the game and that was followed by an Arielle Collins three-pointer that paced an 8-0 run.
Winthrop trailed by 28 points at the half as it managed a season-low 17 points after 21 percent shooting. On the flip side, Fordham couldn't miss as it shot 59 percent and posted 45 points. That included an impressive 7-for-13 from behind the arc.

“We are disappointed,” said Winthrop head coach Marlene Stollings. “We're disappointed in our defensive effort. We just weren't moving. We were stagnant. Everything was a delayed reaction. I thought we had a very good defensive performance Wednesday night and tonight we didn't bring it from the tip. We cannot start games without energy and movement on defense.”

Winthrop continued to struggle getting shots to fall the remainder of the half and Fordham ended the first half on an 18-4 run over the final six and a half minutes. A big part of the Rams success in the first half were second chance points, which accounted for 13 points as they controlled the boards 26-15 (nine offensive rebounds).

The Eagles did outscore Fordham 36-31 in the second half as they shot 46 percent from the field and 4-for-8 from behind the arc.

Coming out of the half, the Rams didn't cool off as they eventually extended their lead to 38 with 6:39 left, but Winthrop finished the game on a 21-6 run behind a trio of three-pointers by Diana Choibekova.

Choibekova ended up leading Winthrop with 13 points off the bench and also dished out three assists while Dequesha McClanahan and Wright each had 12. McClanahan and Wright couldn't get their shots to fall as they were a combined 9-for-36. McClanahan also finished with two assists and three steals.

Winthrop ended the game shooting 33 percent and 25 percent from three. Fordham shot over 50 percent in both halves, finishing at 57 percent for the game.

The Rams were led by Peters' 21 points and Collins added 19 while Charlotte Stoddart had 14.

Winthrop returns home before the break to take on North Carolina Central, Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m.
