ROCK HILL, SC-- Winthrop looks to end a two-game losing streak as it hosts Virginia Commonwealth 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a tough 71-69 loss at Wichita State, their second straight loss by two points.
Winthrop is off to a 2-3 start with all three losses by only a combined 14 points. The Lady Eagles have featured a strong offense so far this year led by junior
Diana Choibekova, who averages 20.4 points and
Dequesha McClanahan's 19 points per game.
Offensively the Lady Eagles are off to one of the best starts in school history, averaging 72.8 points per game over the first five. It's the 7
th best scoring average through five games in school history and the most as a member of the NCAA Division I level.
In addition to Choibekova and McClanahan averaging double-figures, red-shirt freshman
Samiya Wright is averaging 10.6 points while shooting 47 percent from the field, 57 percent from behind the arc and 94 percent from the foul line (15-for-16).
Junior
Katie Fitzgerald is coming off her best game as a Lady Eagle as she tied her career-high in points with 11 and ripped down a career-best 14 rebounds in the loss at Wichita State. She leads the team with a 9.3 rebounding average.
Winthrop will face a VCU team that is 2-2 on the year and coming off a 10-point loss to Charlotte Tuesday evening.
The Rams, who are 3-0 all-time against Winthrop, feature an offense averaging 63.8 points per game while allowing 66.8 points.
Senior Courtney Hurt leads the offense as she's averaging 21.5 points and also 8.0 rebounds. Hurt is shooting 42 percent from the floor and 77 percent from the free throw line. She's averaging 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game in two previous meetings against Winthrop. She's also shot 63 percent from the floor and averaged 4.0 steals. In the last two games this season, Hurt has averaged 32 points per game.
Red-shirt senior Andrea Barbour is also having a good year offensively at 16.5 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the field and also 4.3 rebounds.
The Rams opened up the season with a home loss to High Point, 82-67 but bounced back to win the next two games on the road at Liberty and UMKC. So the Rams are 0-2 at home this season and 2-0 on the road.
