WICHITA, KS—The women's basketball team looks to rebound from Sunday's tough loss to Stetson as it heads west to take on Wichita State, Wednesday evening at 8:05 p.m. (EST).
After three games in three days, the Winthrop women's basketball team welcomed a couple of days between games.
The Lady Eagles are back in action after a couple of days off and a weekend in which they were 1-2, losing two close, competitive games.
Winthrop will take on a Wichita State team that has lost three straight with tough road games at Arizona and UC-Davis and a home contest with Louisiana State.
Winthrop dropped two of its three games at home during the Winthrop Classic and is 2-2 on the year.
Over the course of the three days, Winthrop shot the ball well at 41 percent and shot 39 percent from behind the arc. However, Winthrop's opponents on Friday and Sunday combined for 23 three-point baskets as Bradley connected on 11 and Stetson needed 12 to slip by the Lady Eagles.
Winthrop is looking for three wins in the first five games of the season for the first time since 2007-08.
The combination of junior
Diana Choibekova and sophomore
Dequesha McClanahan has paced the Winthrop offense over the course of the first four games. Choibekova is averaging 20.5 points per game while McClanahan is averaging 20 points per game.
Choibekova, who was named the College Sports Madness Big South Conference Player of the Week, threatened two school records in just her third game in a Winthrop uniform as she scored 33 points in the win over Niagara. Her 33 points were four points shy of tying the most points in a single game in school history. She did tie a school record for most threes in a single game with nine.
McClanahan nearly reached the 30 mark as she scored a career-high 29 points in the loss to Stetson on Sunday. In addition to her scoring, McClanahan is averaging 8.0 assists per game.
Choibekova has been impressive behind the arc having connected on 44 percent. She's also averaging 6.0 rebounds per game.
Freshman
Samiya Wright has made an impact off the bench, averaging 10.5 points per game and shooting an impressive 52 percent from the floor and 64 percent from behind the arc.
Junior
Katie Fitzgerald has worked her way into the starting line-up this season and in four games has averaged 8.3 points and 8.0 rebounds.
On the season, Winthrop is averaging 73.8 points while allowing 64.5.
The Shockers feature a couple of double-figure scorers in junior Jessica Diamond and senior Haleigh Lankster.
Diamond is averaging 13.5 points and led the team in scoring the first two games. Diamond is shooting 55 percent from the floor, is tied for the team lead in assists with 11 and leads the team in steals with 11.
Lankster is averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds as she's shooting 38 percent from the floor.
Wichita State is averaging 60.2 points per game and allowing just 62.2.
The Shockers are 1-1 at home on the season averaging 66.5 points and allowing 56.5 in those two games.
Wichita State won the only ever meeting between the two schools back in 2007, 66-42.
