GREENSBORO, NC--The Winthrop women's golf team managed to move up one spot in the standings to finish in 11th place at the 2011 UNCG Starmount Fall Classic which was played at the Starmount Forest Country Club.
The Lady Eagles started the day in 12th place in the 14-team field and shot a combined score of 313, its best round of the tournament, on Tuesday. Maryland came from behind to overcome second-round leader East Tennessee and won the team title by seven shots over ETSU. Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen won medalist honors as she shot a 54-hole total of 218 to win the individual title by three shots.
Winthrop senior
Kayla Cline (Soccoro, NM) had a top 10 finish as she tied for 9th after firing a three-round total of 226 (72-78-76). That score was 14 shots better than Winthrop's second best finisher, sophomore
Allison Lee (Salisbury, NC), who was 42nd at 240 (81-81-78). Senior
Katie Bolling (New Brighton, MN) tied for 43rd place after finishing with a 241 (78-81-82). Freshman
Jennifer Dilger (Palmdale, CA) was 56th as she closed out with a 246 (85-84-77). Rounding out the Winthrop scoring was sophomore
Nicole Mooberry (Norfolk, NE) who tied for 68th place with a 256 (87-86-83).
Winthrop will have just three days rest before jumping back into action this weekend as the Lady Eagles host the Winthrop Invitational at the Rock Hill Country Club on Oct. 8-9. The theme for the nine-team tournament is "Think Pink" as the team will be raising funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help fight cancer. They will be selling "pink bracelets" for $3 and "pink ribbons" for $1 at the course.
