ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will conclude its home schedule this week with two Big South contests against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose and UNC Asheville Bulldogs at Eagle Field.
The Eagles face the Blue Hose on Oct. 20 and the Bulldogs on Oct. 22. The home finale against UNC Asheville will be Senior Night for Winthrop.
Entering this week Winthrop holds an 8-6 overall record and 4-2 mark in conference play, while Presbyterian College is 3-10-2 on the season and 1-3-2 in the conference.
The Eagles offense is led by forwards
Courtney Durbin and
Krystyna Freda with nine goals on the season, which is tied for first in the Big South. Durbin leads the team overall, and third in the conference, with 23 points. She needs just four more points to break Whitney Sanders' record for most points in a season with 26. Freda has also notched five game-winning goals on the season, while midfielder
Tori Davis has two and Durbin one. Goalkeeper
Sarah Schippers has allowed 21 goals in 2011 for a 1.56 GAA, while compiling 72 saves and a .774 save percentage. Schippers ranks in the top five for the Big South in goals against average, saves and save percentage. She also has one shutout on the year.
The Blue Hose are coached by Brian Purcell, who is in his 23
rd season at the helm of Presbyterian College. He holds a 228-160-19 career record with the program.
Gracie Boswell leads the Blue Hose offensive with eight points this season on three goals and two assists, while Sara Simpson, Stephanie Allen and Alice Blackwell have one game-winning goal each. Goalie Sarah Beth Anderson has given up 33 goals on the year for a 2.36 GAA to go with her .730 save percentage and 89 saves.
Winthrop leads the all-time series over Presbyterian College 3-0-1, and have held the Blue Hose scoreless in all four matches. The Eagles also hold a 2-0 advantage in games played in Rock Hill. The first all-time meeting in a series ended in a 0-0 draw in 2007, while Winthrop won the last meeting in 2010 1-0 in Clinton, SC.
The Bulldogs head into the two-game stretch with a 4-11 overall record, but are 3-3 in Big South play. They are coached by Michelle Demko, who is in her second season with the program. She holds a career coaching record of 5-27, all of which have come at UNC Asheville.
Amanda Knapp leads the Bulldog offense with 16 points on six goals and four assists this season. She leads UNC Asheville in goals, assists and points, while Leilani Halkiotis has a team-high 46 shots. Goalie Heather Muller has surrendered 38 goals on the season for a 2.53 GAA, while compiling a conference-high 92 saves.
The Bulldogs lead the all-time series over the Eagles 8-3-1, but Winthrop has won the last two contests including a 4-0 win in Asheville last season. UNC Asheville won the first six meetings in the series and was unbeaten in the first eight. Winthrop has outscored the Bulldogs 6-1 in the last two games, but trail in games played in Rock Hill 3-1-1.
