ROCK HILL, SC-- Winthrop has lost two in a row for the first time since it lost back-to-back games in December, which it went 5-2 in that month. The Lady Eagles hope to finish out the first half of the conference schedule with a .500 and avoid a losing record in the month of January as they entertain the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles (9-10, 3-4 Big South) are coming off their worst performance in a Big South Conference contest this season as they managed just 33 points on 28 percent shooting and committed 24 turnovers that led to 24 points for Liberty.
One of the biggest surprises of the loss to the Flames was the lack of production by the team's top four scorers. Freshman
Dequesha McClanahan didn't record a single point in the game, which was the second time she had done so this year. She was 0-for-5 from the field and had seven turnovers to three assists. The last time McClanahan failed to score a single point was against Lander and she followed that up with a 14-point performance in leading Winthrop to a road win at North Carolina Central.
Junior
Kaitlyn Rubino also failed to score a point as she only managed one shot and played just 13 minutes. Senior
Lacey Lyons finished the game with zero points on 0-for-2 shooting in 18 minutes of work.
Junior
TaQuoia Hammick continued to shoot her way out of her slump as she was 6-for-12 from the field and had a team-high 12 points to go along with two blocks and two steals. Hammick is shooting 56 percent from the floor and averaging 8.0 points and 6.8 rebounds in conference play so far.
Tonight also marks the first of two meetings between Winthrop and Coastal Carolina in a 13-day span. After tonight Winthrop will step away from conference games and host Longwood on Saturday, Feb. 5. That will mark the end of a home stand that saw the Lady Eagles play eight of 10 games at home and six of those games were against conference opponents. After Longwood, Winthrop will turn right around and face Coastal Carolina in Conway, SC on Saturday Feb. 12. It marks the first time Winthrop has played the same conference opponent back-to-back since the end of the 2006-07 season, in which Winthrop faced High Point in the regular season finale and the first round of the Big South Tournament. It is the first time Winthrop has faced the same conference opponent back-to-back in the regular season since they did in in 1994-95. That year Winthrop opened up against Coastal Carolina, then played Furman and its second conference game of the season was at Coastal Carolina.
The Lady Eagles are facing a Coastal Carolina team that is hungry to get back in the win column as it has dropped seven straight and off to an 0-7 start in the Big South. Coastal's last win came on Dec. 30 on the road at USC Upstate, 70-62. Since then Coastal has gone 0-4 on the road and 0-3 at home in conference play. In seven league games so far, Coastal has been held below 60 points in six of them.
Senior Sydnei Moss leads the way at 10.7 points per game and 7.3 rebounds. Moss, who went down with an injury four minutes into the game at USC Upstate and missed the first two conference games, is averaging 12 points, 6.2 rebounds 1.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.8 turnovers while shooting 44 percent from the floor in five conference games.
Junior Olivia Irick is second on the team in scoring at 10.3 points and has led the team in points in nine games, including 21 points at Radford on Saturday. Irick is tops on the team with 25 threes made and is shooting 34 percent from the floor in 19 games played. In conference play only, Irick is averaging 11.0 points and shooting 33 percent from the floor.
Katie White, a senior center, clogs up the middle with her league-leading 2.7 blocks per game. White also averages 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds.
