DAVIDSON, NC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

The Eagles fall to 0-6-1 overall, while the Wildcats improve their record to 4-4 on the season.

“In the second half we didn't play with the intensity that we needed,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “Davidson got the goals and they outworked us.”

Allison Drutchas of Davidson had the best scoring opportunity for either team in the first half, which came in the 10th minute of play. The Wildcats crossed the ball into the 18-yard box from the near side where the initial shot by Callan Elswick was blocked by Kylene Babauta and the ball flew back outside the 18-yard box to the feet of Drutchas. Her shot went over the head of Winthrop goalie Kelsy Weavil, but hit the top post and over the net.

Davidson finished the first stanza leading the Eagles 5-3 in shots, but Winthrop had two shots on-goal to the Wildcats' one.

Rachel Webster had a team-best two shots for the Eagles in the opening half, while five different Davidson players had one shot each.

Weavil finished the half with one save, and Wildcat goalkeeper Jessie Baxa snagged two saves.

Davidson came out in the second half and immediately put pressure on the Winthrop defense. Just four minutes into the half the Wildcats had a free kick 35-yards out from the near side by Drutchas. Her free kick sailed into the 18-yard box where the header by Lauren Mihan went just past the right post.

Davidson took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute on an own-goal by the Eagles. The own-goal came on a corner kick from the near side after hitting a Winthrop player in the back. A header by Rachael Newmister deflected off a Winthrop defender and led to the corner kick by Drutchas.

The Wildcats extended their lead over the Eagles to 2-0 with 8:12 remaining in the match on a header by Elswick. The goal by Elswick came on a corner kick by Drutchas on the far side. Drutchas sailed the ball to the middle of the 18-yard box where Newmister headed the ball to Elswick at the far post.

Davidson outshot Winthrop 18-6 in the contest and 4-3 in shots on-goal. The Wildcats also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Webster and Tricia Vensel led the Eagles on offense with two shots apiece, while Drutchas and Elswick both had four shots for the Wildcats.

Weavil concluded the contest with two saves and Baxa snagged three saves.

Winthrop will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 29 as it will travel to Orangeburg, SC to face the South Carolina State Bulldogs at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference contest of the season.
