Women’s Soccer Set For Weekend Tilt With Georgia State And Davidson

Eagles Host Panthers Friday Night, Travel To Face The Wildcats Sunday

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team will return to the soccer field this weekend with two matches against the Georgia State Panthers and Davidson Wildcats. The Eagles will host the Panthers on Friday night at 7 p.m., while traveling to take on the Wildcats at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

This will be the first time Winthrop (0-4-1) and Georgia State have faced each other since the Panthers defeated the Eagles 4-0 in Rock Hill on Aug. 31, 2008. Davidson walked away with a 3-1 victory over Winthrop on Aug. 22, 2009 to begin the season.

The game against Georgia State Friday evening will be the only home contest for the Eagles in the month of September. Winthrop will not host another home game until the conference opener against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 2.

The Panthers are currently 4-2-1 on the season with two double-overtime wins over Jacksonville State and Mercer, as well as victories against Georgia Southern and Alabama A&M. Jewel Evans and Sarah Bennett are tied for the team lead in goals with four apiece, while Evans leads the squad with nine points. Jocelyn Baker has a team-best three assists for Georgia State. The program is coached by Domenic Martelli, who is in his 11th year as head coach of the Panthers.

The Wildcats post a 3-4 overall record heading into the weekend matchup with wins against UNC Wilmington, and Big South members High Point and Presbyterian. Deprise Brazel leads Davidson with three goals and six points on the season, and Allison Drutchas has a team-best three assists. The Wildcats are coached by Greg Ashton, who has been at the university for seven seasons.

The Eagles are led offensively by senior forward Tricia Vensel in three different categories: goals (2), points (6) and shots (16). Sophomore midfielder Allie VandeWater leads Winthrop in assists with three, and redshirt-junior goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil has snagged 15 saves on the season.

After this weekend, the Eagles will have only one more game the rest of September. The squad will travel down to Orangeburg, SC on Wednesday, Sept. 29 for a non-conference matchup against the South Carolina State Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
