ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team was defeated by the Miami (OH) RedHawks 2-0 on Friday afternoon during day one of the 2010 ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel held at Summers-Taylor Stadium. It marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Eagles fall to 0-3-1 on the season, while the RedHawks improve their record to 4-2 overall.

“At times we moved the ball well today in the middle-third of the field, but didn't create enough quality chances,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “Miami (OH) is a well coached team with good athleticism, but we showed that we can play with teams of that caliber.”

Miami (OH) struck first to take a 1-0 lead over Winthrop in the 7th minute of play on Katy Dolesh's first goal of the season. The header by Dolesh came off a cross from Jess Kodiak.

The Eagles tried to respond with back-to-back scoring opportunities from Rachel Webster in the 20th minute and Tiana Tallant in the 22nd minute, but their chances were negated by saves from RedHawk goalie Kris Gasparovic.

Miami (OH) added to its lead at 2-0 in the 29th minute when Kodiak received a through pass from Sarah Dessfelt and put her shot past Winthrop goalkeeper Sarah Schippers. Dessfelt made the quick through pass after gaining possession on a pass from Courtney Clarke.

The Eagles outshot the RedHawks in the first half 7-6, while Miami (OH) held the advantage in corner kicks 4-1.

Tallant and Tricia Vensel led Winthrop with two shots each in the first stanza, and Dolesh led Miami (OH) with two shots. Schippers finished the first half with one save, while Gasparovic snagged two saves.

Gasparovic prevented another Eagle scoring chance in the 61st minute with her save of a Courtney Durbin penalty kick. The penalty kick opportunity came on a foul moments after Schippers made a save off a header by Dolesh.

Winthrop finished the match with a 13-12 lead in total shots over the RedHawks, and both teams attempted five shots on-goal.

Vensel led the Eagles offensively with three shots and was one of five players with one attempt on-net. Schippers grabbed a total of three saves for Winthrop. Dolesh posted a team-high three shots for Miami (OH), while Gasparovic had five saves on the afternoon.

Winthrop will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 12 with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on the final day of the 2010 ETSU Soccer Invitational presented by DoubleTree Hotel.
