ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team opened its 2010 season with a 2-2 tie against the Marshall Thundering Herd on Friday evening during day one of the 2010 Winthrop Invitational at Eagle Field.

The Eagles record is now 0-0-1 on the season, while the Thundering Herd are now 0-1-1 overall.

“I think we learned something from this game,” said head coach Spencer Smith.

Winthrop got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd minute of play to take a 1-0 lead over Marshall on Tricia Vensel's first goal of the season. Vensel created the scoring opportunity after receiving a long pass from Allie VandeWater to the far side. Vensel beat the Thundering Herd defender to the right and put her shot past goalkeeper Caroline Harwell into the bottom right of the net.

The contest was then halted at the 28:11 mark of the first half due to thunderstorms in the Rock Hill area before being resumed after an hour and thirty-two minute delay.

The Eagles increased their lead in the 39th minute to 2-0 on Megan Pritts's first career goal. Vensel got the play started with her pass back to Allie VandeWater, who immediately dished the ball to Pritts for her shot from 21-yards out past a diving Harwell.

The Thundering Herd answered back with consecutive goals within a two minute span of play. Sarah Vinson cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 50th minute when Marisa Leconte made a pass across the 18-yard box to Vinson. Vinson then proceeded to put her one-timer past Winthrop goalie Kelsy Weavil. Megan Tabler followed the Vinson goal with one of her own in the 51st minute to tie the game at 2-2. Tabler scored her goal courtesy of a one-on-one against Weavil, and put the shot into the back-left corner of the goal from 15-yards out.

“I was certainly pleased with how we played up until giving up that first goal,” Smith added. “Hopefully we can learn from this and use it for our next game.”

Marshall outshot the Eagles 23-17 in the contest, and also held a 10-9 advantage in shots on-goal and attempted 10 corner kicks compared to Winthrop's three.

Vensel posted a team-high seven shots on the evening for the Eagles and also had four shots on-target. Angela Desumma led the Thundering Herd in shots with nine and shots on-goal with four. Weavil finished the contest with eight saves, while Lindsey Kerns came on for Marshall in the second half and snagged five saves.

Winthrop will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 29 with a 3:30 p.m. contest against the Appalachian State Mountaineers on the final day of the 2010 Winthrop Invitational.
