2010 Schedule
ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop head men's soccer coach Rich Posipanko announced Friday a 20-game schedule for the 2010 season that will include three home exhibition games and 17 regular season games.
In addition to the three home exhibition games, the Eagles will have eight regular season home games.
This year will be one of the youngest teams in the Posipanko era as the roster will feature only one senior, seven juniors and 19 underclassmen. Posipanko and his staff have to replace six starters from its 2009 Big South Conference Championship team.
“As we do each year we attempt to put together the best and most challenging schedule available to us,” said Posipanko. “Since we have the youngest team in the past 22 years with one senior player, we feel this will be a competitive schedule for our young team. The exhibition games and the start of the season will give us a good idea as to where we are as a team and prepare us for conference play and the Big South Tournament. We feel this schedule will allow us to grow as a team and hopefully be playing our best soccer in November as we challenge for a third straight BSC Championship and NCAA College Cup appearance.”
The exhibition games include two strong teams from the Southern Conference in Furman and Elon as well as Charlotte, who represented the Atlantic 10 in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The regular season begins at home against Division II foe Brevard College on Friday, Sept. 3 followed by a contest against Mercer at home on Sunday, Sept. 5. The rest of the home schedule is filled out by Liberty (Sept. 25), High Point (Oct. 6), Virginia Military Institute (Oct. 12), College of Charleston (Oct. 19), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 27) and Marshall (Oct. 30).
The road schedule begins on Sept. 10 as the Eagles head to Wilmington, NC for the UNC Wilmington Classic. Winthrop will open against Long Island on Friday and then face the host school UNCW on Sunday, Sept. 12. The Seahawks advanced to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament before falling 2-1 to Wake Forest. Winthrop will also hit the road for games against East Tennessee State (Sept. 15), Georgia Southern (Sept. 19), Presbyterian (Sept. 29), Wofford (Oct. 2), Radford (Oct. 16), Coastal Carolina (Oct. 23) and UNC Asheville (Nov. 3).
In 2010 the Big South Conference Tournament will be held at Richard F. Vert Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of High Point University from Nov. 12-15.
