Howard And Simms Capture Big South Titles At 2010 Indoor Track & Field Championships (2-28-10)

Winthrop Breaks 6 School Records, 9 Eagles Earn All-Conference

CLEMSON, SC-- Winthrop captured two conference championships and earned nine all-conference awards wihle breaking six school records at the 2010 Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held this past weekend at the Clemson Indoor Track Facility.

“That is the best I have seen our team compete from top to bottom," said Winthrop head track & field coach Ben Paxton. "It is hard to get motivated when the larger teams are scoring points right and left. Our kid won plenty of battles and we have two champions, nine all conference selections and an amazing six school records to prove it.”

Winthrop senior Ashley Howard (Wilmington, OH) captured the Big South title in the women's shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 10 inches and finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 55 feet, 3.75 inches.  The men's team was led by the championship performance of junior Keary Simms (Ft. Pierce, FL) who took the title in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.14 seconds.  He also had a third place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 9 inches.
