ROCK HILL, SC— The women's basketball team looks for its second straight road win as it heads to Blacksburg, VA to take on ACC foe Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon.
Winthrop is coming off a 62-60 road win at North Carolina Central, a game in which it trailed in the final minute. Freshman Dequesha McClanahan scored the winning basket with four seconds to go in the game.
The Lady Eagles (2-4), face a Virginia Tech team that has lost three straight after opening the season with four consecutive wins. The Hokies are 1-0 against the Big South this year with a 59-52 home win over Presbyterian College and defeated a VCU team that knocked off the Lady Eagles by 10.
Virginia Tech has traveled a lot of miles in the past week having played two games in Cancun, Mexico over the Thanksgiving holiday and then heading to Minneapolis, MN to take on the University of Minnesota Thursday evening as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Hokies will be happy to be back in Cassell Coliseum, where they are a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Senior Lacey Lyons still leads Winthrop at 9.8 points per game followed by McClanahan at 9.7, Kaitlyn Rubino at 7.8 and Mary Hathaway at 7.7. Hathaway, a sophomore guard/forward, is coming off a career-high 16 points. Lyons was 2-for-4 from behind the arc against North Carolina Central and is now 13th all-time in three-point field goals made in Big South history.
Junior guard Shanel Harrison leads the team in scoring at 11.8 points and is the only player in double-fi gures for the season. She shoots 42 percent from the fi eld and currently leads the team in free throw attempts at 28. Harrison didn't score against Iowa and did not play in the game at Minnesota. Sophomore Aerial Wilson has led the team in scoring the last two contests as she scored 14 at Minnesota and 11 against 20th-ranked Iowa.
This will be the third meeting between the two schools all-time. Virginia Tech has won both meetings The first meeting came in 1980 at the Virginia Tech Invitational in a 60-54 win and the other meeting was in 1994 with the Hokies winning 75-45.
Winthrop head coach Bud Childers is closing in on 460 career wins as he currently has 458.
