DAYTON, OH
--Winthrop remains winless in the state of Ohio after falling to defending NIT champion Dayton, 73-58, on Monday night at UD Arena.

Winthrop has now lost all four games it has played in UD arena and are 0-9 in the state of Ohio, The Eagles fall to 5-6 as it heads to Lexington, KY for a Wednesday afternoon bout with the 16th ranked Kentucky Wildcats.  Dayton improves to 9-3 on the season.

Dayton won the game on the strength of its offensive rebounding and 3-point shooting.  The Flyers claimed 22 offensive rebounds and outscored the Eagles 19-8 on second chance points.  UD also connected on 10 three-point field goals (10-29) while Winthrop finished 3 of 11.

The loss overshadowed a strong effort by senior Charles Corbin who scored a game-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds.  Corbin scored 15 of his points in the second half on an assortment of inside moves.  Also in double figures for the Eagles were Robbie Dreher with 14 and Reggie Middleton with 10.

Despite being outscored by 12 points from behind the arc, the Eagles finished with a better field goal shooting percentage (42.3 compared to 41.4 for Dayton), but UD attempted 18 more shots thanks to its work on the offensive boards.

Dayton led the entire way after breaking a 2-2 tie on a jumper by freshman point guard Juwan Staten with 17:58 left in the first period.  Winthrop got to within two points twice after that at 12-10 on a 3-pointer from Dreher at the 14:10 mark and again 14-12 following a layup from Joab Jerome with 12:51 on the clock.  Dayton then outscored the Eagles 17-5 over the next seven minutes to take control of the contest.  The Flyers led 39-27 at intermission.

Winthrop limited Dayton's leading scorer Chris Wright to 10 points, including just two in the second half.  The preseason Atlantic 10 selection was coming off a 30-point performance last Saturday night against Western Carolina.  In addition to Wright's 10 points, Chris Johnson led the Flyers with 16 while 10 of the 11 players that saw action for Dayton got into the scoring column.

"I was pleased with our effort tonight," said Winthrop head coach Randy Peele.  "But we had trouble guarding the ball and working the defensive board.  When a team gets 22 offensive rebounds against us, there isn't much of a chance.  Those are things that we have to correct. "
