RADFORD, VA –
The Winthrop women's soccer team saw its 2010 season end with a 1-0 defeat to the fifth-seeded High Point Panthers on Saturday evening at Cupp Memorial Stadium on day two of the Big South Women's Soccer Championship.

The Eagles finish the season with a 7-10-2 overall record, while the Panthers improve to 9-10-1 on the season.

“I thought we certainly played well in the first 45 minutes,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “Overall I am very pleased, not just with this tournament, but this season. I think the girls have a lot to be proud of for the way we turned things around.”

Winthrop wasted little time posting the best scoring opportunity for either team in the opening half. In the fourth minute of play Tricia Vensel received a long pass on the near side and dribbled past a High Point defender into the 18-yard box. Her shot from 13-yards out went over the head of Panther goalie Andrea Ritchie and hit off the inside portion of the far post. The High Point defense got the rebound and cleared the ball out of its side of the field.

Both defenses for the Eagles and Panthers controlled a majority of the first half as a total of eight shots were taken. Winthrop held a 5-3 advantage in shots and 2-1 in shots on-goal. High Point led 2-0 in corner kicks.

Five different Eagles attempted one shot each, while Kylene Babauta and Tiana Tallant had both shots on-goal. Goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil added one save in the first stanza.

Katie Taber, Becca Hemby and Cary Ann Parrish had all three shots for the Panthers, and Hemby had the lone shot on-goal. Ritchie finished the first half with two saves.

High Point took a 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute on Kelli Joline's 10th goal of the season. Joline got possession of the ball outside the 18-yard box after a Winthrop turnover. Joline dribbled to the top of the box and ripped her shot from 25-yards out. The ball went over Weavil's head and into the net under the crossbar.

The Panthers finished the match outshooting the Eagles 14-8 and 4-2 in attempts on-net. Both teams took three corner kicks apiece.

Courtney Durbin had a team-high two shots to lead Winthrop offensively, while Babauta and Tallant had one shot on-goal each.

Taber took five shots for High Point and was one of four players to take one shot on-goal.

Durbin and senior Katie Perkinson were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Eagles. It is the first All-Tournament honor for Durbin, while Perkinson earns her second recognition.
