ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team saw its six-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday evening with a 1-0 loss to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Eagle Field.

The Eagles fall to 6-9-2 on the season and 6-2-1 in the conference, while the Chanticleers improve to 10-7-2 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play.

The goal by Coastal Carolina came in the 72nd minute of play on Okina Crawley's first goal of the season on a free kick from 45-yards out. Crawley's free kick sailed just over the reach of Winthrop goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil and went into the right corner of net just under the top crossbar.

“I thought we battled hard tonight, but were unfortunate on the goal. Sometimes that happens. You have Coastal Carolina credit. Overall though, I am pleased and proud with our effort.”

Winthrop posted the first scoring chance of the match in the 36th minute when Courtney Durbin's shot from the top of the 18-yard box hit the top crossbar and rolled to the near side of the field. Rachel Webster got the rebound and made a touch pass back to the top of the 18, but the Chanticleer defense intercepted it and cleared the ball back to midfield.

Coastal Carolina responded with a chance of its own in the 38th minute when Anna Tupy attempted a shot just inside the 18-yard box, but Weavil made a diving save to her right to deny Tupy of the goal.

Tupy came back in the 41st minute with another shot opportunity from 15-yards out, but Weavil once again made the save.

Kylene Babauta gave the Eagles two more chances at a goal just before halftime in the 43rd minute when her initial shot was blocked by a Chanticleer, and her rebound attempt was denied by Coastal Carolina goalie Amy Haggard on a nice save.

Winthrop outshot Coastal Carolina 8-4 in the opening half and 5-3 in shots on-goal. The Chanticleers led in corner kicks 2-1.

Babauta and Tricia Vensel attempted two shots and one attempt on-net each, while Weavil added three saves.

Tupy had two shots, both on-goal, and Haggard grabbed five saves.

The Chanticleers, in the 55th minute, had the best scoring chance of either team in the second stanza on a free kick by Hannah Brown from 23-yards out. Weavil made the save, but the ball came out of her hands in the process. She was able to fall back onto the ball before Coastal Carolina could take another shot attempt.

The Eagles led the Chanticleers 11-9 in shots, and both teams took six shots on-net and three corner kicks.

Durbin led Winthrop offensively with three shots on the evening, and was one of six players to have one shot on-goal. Weavil finished the match with five saves.

Brown and Tupy attempted three shots each for Coastal Carolina, while Brown had three shots on-goal. Haggard finished the contest with a total of six saves.

The Eagles finished the regular season as Big South Conference Co-Regular Season Champions with the Chanticleers, Charleston Southern, Radford and High Point. By virtue of the tie-breaker, Winthrop will be the No. 1 seed in next week's Big South Conference Women's Soccer Championship. The Eagles will play the No. 8 seed VMI at 2 p.m. The conference tournament will be played at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium on the campus of Radford University.
