CLINTON, SC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team picked up its fourth straight victory on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 win against the Presbyterian Blue Hose at Martin Stadium.

The Eagles improve to 5-8-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in the Big South, while the Blue Hose fall to 5-11-1 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

“I thought we played very well today,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “At times our ball movement in the field was really good and I felt like we created some good chances because of that. Defensively, I felt we were real solid in the back. This was a good win for us against a good Presbyterian team.”

Winthrop took a 1-0 lead over Presbyterian in the 32nd minute of play on Tricia Vensel's third goal of the season. Vensel gained possession of the ball after receiving a long pass and dribbled to the outside of the 18-yard box near side. She beat a Blue Hose defender and put her right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net.

The Eagles held a 10-3 advantage in shots during the first half and 4-2 in shots on-goal. Presbyterian led 2-1 in corner kicks.

Vensel and Courtney Durbin both attempted three shots in the opening half, while Durbin posted two attempts on-net. Goalkeeper Kelsy Weavil added two saves.

Rebecca Miller took a team-best two shots and one shot on-goal for the Blue Hose, and Kate Baker also had one shot on-goal. Goalie Jordan Broadway grabbed three saves.

Winthrop had back-to-back scoring opportunities within a two-minute span during the second half. In the 84th minute, Tiana Tallant gained possession of the ball just outside the 18-yard box, faked a shot against the Presbyterian defender, but her left-footed shot from 16-yards out went just high of the net. Two minutes later, in the 86th minute, Durbin made a through pass to Allie VandeWater inside the 18-yard box and the shot by VandeWater was denied by Broadway.

The Eagles finished the match with a 19-7 lead in shots and 8-2 in shots on-goal. Both teams attempted five corner kicks each.

Durbin led Winthrop offensively with four shots and two attempts on-goal, while Weavil added two saves for her third shutout of the season.

Miller, Sara Simpson and Tori Lopez all had two shots apiece for the Blue Hose, and Baker and Miller had both shots on-goal. Broadway snagged a total of seven saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 27 as they will host the Charleston Southern Buccaneers at 4 p.m.
