ASHEVILLE, NC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team scored four first-half goals on Friday afternoon, and walked away with a 4-0 win over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in Big South Conference action at Greenwood Soccer Field.

The Eagles third straight victory improves them to 4-8-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-13 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.

The four first-half goals are the most by Winthrop against a Big South opponent in school history.

“We came out fast in the first half and scored some early goals,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “It gave us some confidence and helped dictate the game. It was good to get everyone into the game and I was pleased with their performance.”

The Eagles wasted little time jumping ahead of UNC Asheville 1-0 in the 5th minute on Courtney Durbin's team-leading fifth goal of the season. Kylene Babauta's initial shot from the far side was saved by Bulldog goalie Megan Dent, but the ball deflected back into the middle of the 8-yard box where Durbin put the rebound header into the goal.

Winthrop went ahead 2-0 in the 7th minute of play when Rachel Webster received a wide open cross near side and dribbled the ball to the near post. She made a pass back across the 18-yard box to Allie VandeWater, who immediately took a sliding shot and put it past Dent for her second goal of the season.

Five minutes later, in the 12th minute, the Eagles added to its lead at 3-0 on the first career goal by Tiana Tallant. Tallant gained possession of the ball after getting a wide open cross in the middle of the field and dribbled all the way to the top of the 18-yard box where she took her shot. The shot went past Dent and into the top right corner of the net.

Winthrop added to their advantage at 4-0 in the 38th minute on Tallant's second goal of the match. Durbin got the ball on the near side off a long pass. She took the ball to the outside of the 18-yard box near side, and made a soft pass to the top of the box where Tallant scored from 13-yards out. Her shot went past UNC Asheville backup goalkeeper Kristen Lawson and into the bottom right corner of the net.

The Eagles led in shots 9-3 during the first half and 6-3 in shots on-goal. The Bulldogs held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Durbin had a team-high four shots in the opening half and had two shots on-goal along with Tallant. Weavil finished the opening half with two saves.

Leilani Halkiotis had two shots for UNC Asheville and one attempt on-net. Mary Beale also recorded one shot on-goal. Both Dent and Lawson had one save each.

Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the second stanza. The best chance for Winthrop came in the 68th minute when Andrea McMaster had a breakaway run from midfield. McMaster made a long run into the 18-yard box unchallenged by the Bulldog defense, but Lawson would make a diving save to her right to prevent the chance for McMaster.

The Eagles concluded the game with a 15-5 shot advantage over UNC Asheville and 10-4 in shots on-goal, while the Bulldogs led in corner kicks 5-2 over Winthrop.

Durbin finished the match with five shots and was one of three players with two shots on-goal. Tallant and McMaster also had two attempts on-net each. Weavil snagged a total of three saves to earn her third consecutive shutout, and Sarah Schippers came on in the second half and added one save.

Halkiotis had a team-best two shots for UNC Asheville and was one of four different players with one with shot on-goal. Lawson grabbed a total of five saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 24 as it will travel to Clinton, SC to face the Presbyterian Blue Hose at 2 p.m. It will be the final regular season road contest for Winthrop this season.
