ROCK HILL, SC –
Ann Lutzenkirchen's goal in the 65th minute proved to be the difference-maker as the Winthrop women's soccer team defeated the Radford Highlanders 1-0 on Friday evening at Eagle Field, in Big South Conference action.

The Eagles improve to 2-8-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Big South, while the Highlanders fall to 9-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

“In the first half, we didn't play particularly well,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “Our back-four did a good job of keeping us in the game. We played up to our capabilities in the second half. It's a good win for us against a good program and a well-coached team.”

The goal by Lutzenkirchen was her first of the season, and came after the initial shot by Allie VandeWater from inside the 18-yard box was saved by Radford goalkeeper Che' Brown. Brown was unable to hold on to the ball, and Lutzenkirchen put her follow-up shot into the net before Brown could dive onto the ball.

Winthrop came out of the gates in the first half and immediately had two scoring attempts on the Highlanders. In the second minute of play, Tricia Vensel's shot from 15-yards out was saved by Brown, and her shot one minute later was blocked by the Radford defense.

The Highlanders also had an opportunity of their own coming in the 19th minute. Radford had a corner kick on the far side, and the kick by Mary Wiley sailed into a crowd of players just outside the net. The Eagles did not have an opportunity to clear the ball, which left Julie Ruh'E with a shot from 12-yards out. Her scoring chance was denied on a save by Winthrop goalie Kelsy Weavil.

Vensel lead the Eagles with three shots (one on-goal) in the first stanza and Weavil grabbed three saves. Ruh'E also added three shots with two coming on-goal for Radford and Brown had one save.

The Highlanders outshot Winthrop in the opening half 8-3 and 3-1 in shots on-goal. Both teams attempted three corner kicks.

The Eagles had a chance before the Lutzenkirchen goal to take the lead over Radford. In the 50th minute Vensel left a ball back to Courtney Durbin and gave her chance for a goal on the breakaway. The pressure from the Highlander defense caused Durbin to dribble the ball to the far post, and her left-footed shot went wide of the net.

Radford looked to take the lead in the 52nd minute when Ruh'E attempted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Her shot was deflected up in the air by Weavil, but the ball did not clear the net and was left bouncing in front of the goal line. Weavil was then able to save it just before it went into the goal.

The Highlanders finished the contest with a 16-13 advantage in shots, while both teams took six shots on-goal each. Radford and Winthrop also attempted five corner kicks on the evening.

Vensel had a team-high five shots and three attempts on-net for the Eagles, and Weavil earned her first shutout of the season after snagging six saves.

Ruh'E and Latrice Lee both had five shots on offense for the Highlanders, while Ruh'E had three shots on-goal. Brown finished the match with a total of five saves.

Winthrop will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 17 as it hosts the VMI Keydets in a 2 p.m. matchup.
