HIGH POINT, NC –
The Winthrop women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against the High Point Panthers in Big South Conference action on Monday evening at Vert Track & Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles are now 1-8-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play, while the Panthers record goes to 4-9-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in the conference.

“It was a good result for us,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “I felt like we played hard for 110 minutes tonight. We battled back after the disheartening loss at Liberty. I am very proud of our effort overall.”

Winthrop looked to get on the scoreboard first with back-to-back scoring chances in the 7th and 8th minutes. The shot by Tricia Vensel in the 7th minute and Courtney Durbin in the 8th minute were both saved by High Point goalie Andrea Ritchie.

The Panthers responded with two opportunities of their own starting in the 14th minute when Eagle goalie Kelsy Weavil made a diving save of a shot by Danielle Schepler from 15-yards out. In the 27th minute, a shot from the far side by Kelli Joline inside the 18-yard box went just wide of the net near side.

Winthrop took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on Durbin's second goal of the season. The play started when the Eagles pressured the High Point defense with a 4v3 counter-attack and Allie VandeWater laid her pass off to Durbin on the far side. Durbin put her shot past Ritchie into the right side of the net.

The Eagles looked to extend their lead in the 38th minute when a cross by Kylie Long to Lia Gordon, who was fighting off a Panther defender, inside the 8-yard box. Gordon jumped to take her shot in mid-air, but Ritchie was there to deny the shot.

In the first half, High Point led in shots 10-6 while both teams had five shots on-goal. The Panthers also led in corner kicks 4-0.

Durbin led Winthrop with two shots (both on-goal), while Weavil grabbed five saves. Joline and Katie Taber had three shots and two on-goal each for High Point. Ritchie added four saves.

The Panthers increased their offensive pressure in the last 10 minutes of the second half beginning in the 81st minute. Sammy Vercellino took a cross from the near side and instead of the ball dropping into the crowd of players, it started drifting towards the goal. Weavil jumped to deflect the ball, but it went over her head and off the crossbar.

High Point would tie the contest at 1-1 in the 86th minute when Margaret Fanning gained possession of the ball from 22-yards out after the Eagles cleared the ball out. Fanning took the left-footed shot and it went into the top left corner of the net.

The Panthers outshot Winthrop in the match 24-8 and 9-7 in attempts on-net. High Point also held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Durbin posted a team-high three shots, all of which were on-goal, for the Eagles, while Gordon added two shots on-goal. Weavil finished the contest with eight saves.

Taber led the Panthers offensively with five shots and tied with Joline in shots on-goal with two apiece. Ritchie had four saves, while Jesse May came on in the second half and snagged two saves.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 15 as it hosts the Radford Highlanders at 7 p.m.
